What Is, And What Is Not....

There have been numerous articles written about the "technical" aspect of fly fishing. I usually don't read them for the reason I don't have much need to. I'm sure one can say they are required to use some form of technical fishing when they are in waters with high angling pressure. But there is also the fact that a trout eats when it's necessary. They eat for survival, if there is a large caddis hatch they will feed heavily on them which makes perfect sense, not to technical...but say there is no hatch going on do they stop eating or do they find something else to consume? Again the answer is not technical, they will find something else.

A section of small stream. There are trout in here at times and they are feeding. Looking at the section and trying to figure out where trout are, again not technical. Your options are, fish the right, center or left. Doing this your probably going to hook-up.

This brookie was taken from the left side within the shady part of the stream.

Pizzelle and Espresso...not very technical but very delicious.

Now as to the pocket knife....it's meaning is the buck stops here when it comes to technical fly fishing.

  1. And what does it say if it is a Swill Army knife?

  2. I love Pizzelles! I'll have to leave the picture up for my wife and drop the hint for my birthday next week.

Bill there are a couple of local bake shops that feature them. They make great ice cream sandwiches.

  3. Never had a Pizzelle, but it looks mighty tasty. In my opinion, not much technical about fly fishing. Give them what they want that day and they will bite. Plain and simple.

  4. Hi Alan,
I'm uncomfortable applying the word "technical" to fishing - makes it sound too serious, too much like the "W" word. For me simplicity is what what we should strive for. I loved the pictures you posted of the dad and daughter fishing. Yesterday I watched a grandfather and 6-year-old grandson dapping for small brookies with a tenkara set up. Hope to try it with my grand kids once it's safe to travel.
    Best,
    John

John you could see the love between the two of them.
Dapping is perfect with a tenkara rod. Very effective way to fish small streams.
When you do get the chance to fish with the grand kids, I want to see some pictures.

  5. I fell into the technical abyss for a time. And then when I realized I was lugging around more gear than a Sherpa I listened to my inner Thoreau and simplified. Now, it's just me, a rod, and a small box of flies in a shirt pocket. Soooo much better. So much more satisfying. So simple...

Mike I guess we all fell into that need to have more. Luckily we saved ourselves...inner Thoreau, I like that.
Every once in awhile I tend to slip and have to slap myself.

The shade in that stream is the friend of the trout and the angler. Being able to decide what the trout are feeding on and how to present the fly pattern to get them to take the fly is technical enough for me. The Pizzelle is a new one for me. Thanks for sharing

Bill is small streams shade is crucial to the trout survival. They can almost vanish in it. Bill you would love Pizzelle.
