Summertime and the....

We are well into summer around these parts. 97 degrees as I type this. It's been hot and no real relief in sight. So with that I have turned to the lakes and ponds for my fly fishing fix. Those blue gills and bass are willing to take my offerings and will keep a bend in the rod. My stamina in the heat is not good, an hour or so and I'm heading back. Water is a must and I drink plenty of it. I'm sure this heat will pass and cooler temps will return.

Until then here are a few winter scenes to cool you down. I may just fish that stream soon....

...with the "Winter Brown".

The Winter Brown is a very productive soft hackle fly.

  1. Beautiful flies! I am looking forward cooler weather on the way later this week (and dreaming a bit about winter too).

Shawn I figure by Friday we will be able to enjoy cooler days, and if we are lucky we'll get some decent rains.

  3. Hot out here too Alan. Been flirting with 100 for the past week or so and will be between 94 & 100+ for the next 10 days at least, but that's California in the Summer. Only one big fire going on up by Mt. Shasta.

Mark you guys have been in the oven for a few days. I hope the fire season is not like it was last year.

  4. Hi Alan,

I am on a chemical plant shut Down / turnaround project at Kingston upon Hull on the east coast of England at the moment and we have highs of 17 deg C (around 63 deg F) and drizzle (perfect BWO weather for you guys over the pond)! So glad we don't have your temperatures, those temps and working 12 - 13 hour shifts do not mix too well!

Love those Winter Brown ties. It is a 'go to fly' for me on mild winter / early spring days to match the willow and needle flies coming off of the little river Leven and the river Tees - those old North Country fishermen knew there stuff!

Keep those post coming, they are a welcome interlude to help me decompress slightly during my shift!

    Take care and stay safe

    Alistair

Alistair 63 deg. is perfect. Those are long work days, must be strength zapping for sure. The Winter Brown has been good for me also in the colder months. I will form time to time tie one on now and to my surprise there is a trout who likes it.

  5. Have faith Alan, it will cool down. We had a stretch of dry 100 degree weather. Now it's low 70's and rainy. Just what we need to re-fill the streams.

Bill I see the heat will break tomorrow and then a couple of days of rainy weather, it's all good.

Bill one or two days of heat is bearable but four in a row is a bit much. It ends today. I might even have to break out the stew pot and make some up.

  7. Alan,
Your Winter Browns above are delicious looking! They are very well tied as usual! Excellent craftsmanship! This pattern is always a killer for me especially on Bluegill!
I agree with you about stillwaters (lakes and ponds) as being the place to be when the heat gets turned up! Gills tend to be surface risers and feeders unless the air and water temps (near the surface) are just unbearable! I too head to the house when it gets this way!
Another excellent thread Alan! Thank you for posting it!

Doug I enjoy fishing for bluegills, it brings me back some years when I was a kid. The bass are a welcome addition to pond fishing. I may try for some brookies today. Parts of the area got some much needed rain yesterday.

My goodness Armando 22f sounds refreshing but I don't want those temps just yet. It seems the hot temps come earlier each year.
