Meet the Adams Family
Top Left, Adams Hairwing, Top Right, The Adams, Bottom Left, Adams Reversed Parachute, Bottom Right, Adams Parachute
The Adams dry fly has been around for years, and continues to be one of the most productive dry fly patterns created. I'm sure most fly fishers have this pattern in their boxes.
I carry them in size 14 and 16, using the parachutes most and in size 16.
This is the newest Adams, reversed tied.
When you look at the Adams you'll notice that it has almost all of the fish taking ingredients. A great fly for sure.
Very nice and effective flies. Do you think the reverse tied parachute is more likely to catch fish than the original parachute? I could also add another member to the family. I have tied a sakasa kebari with the adams color scheme and it works pretty well also. Maybe I'll post it soon.
ReplyDeleteI will have to try to tie some up if i can see a size 14 hook that is.
ReplyDeleteI'm a big fan of the Paracgute Adams. Like Kiwi, I'm also curious about the reverse tie. What is the thinking behind that one?
ReplyDeleteKiwi, Jay,
ReplyDeleteThe reversed parachute is the design of Roy Christie. I started tying and fishing these a year or so ago. They are very effective on the taking of trout. These are Roy's reasons for the concept, and I agree.
it sets the tippet below the surface so there is less micro drag
there is less resistance against the tippet having to penetrate the surface film when the fish takes the fly gently = less brushoffs
the hackle makes the hook set out into the fish's jaw, cannot lay flat, makes positive hookups,
the gape is unobstructed - positive hookups again
the hook point is masked into the hackle, seen from below.
the hook balances on the hackle so it will float longer than a (eg) Klinkhamer.
Savage,
I can see what you mean, being the person who ties those salty brutes.
Great looking set of flies. I was just tying up some parachutes yesterday. Alan, did you see Don Bastian's recent post about his Adams wet?
ReplyDeleteDarren,
ReplyDeleteThanks. I read his post on his blog. As usual Don did very well.
Good work, Alan
ReplyDeleteRev Para,
ReplyDeleteComing from you , its appriciated.
Thanks Roy
