New Waters and Fran's Fly

This was one of those small streams that was on my list to fish. I had never fished it before, but my research said it held brook trout.
Upon arriving at the stream, I found access to be quite easy, with some very handy parking. I said to myself...to easy, and that proved to be right. It was to be an enjoyable outing fishing new and what was to be productive.

I had chosen to fish a favorite fly today, one that is special. The fly has been a success for me most times I've fished it. The fly is a creation of Adirondack fly fishing legend Fran Betters. The fly is tied in a simple rough and rustic fashion, common to many of Frans flies. The fly is the "Aussable Wulff". If you want a fly that floats well, has great visibility, and catches fish, then this is the fly for you.
On this day Frans fly worked its magic on the beautiful wild brook trout, that find their home in this free flowing freestone, small stream.

While parking was easy, fishing required some rough walking to access the good water.

While fishing, time is taken to enjoy the beauty along the stream.

The "Ausable Wulff" as tied by "Fran Betters". This fly was purchased by me in Frans shop in Wilmington, N.Y.

This my attempt at the Ausable Wulff.

And when you come upon a stream like this, and you present an Ausable Wulff, just right. One of natures most beautiful wild jewels will give you the opportunity to hold him.

  1. Beautiful pics and a great fly! I have a few Ausable wulff's from Fran's shop also and have always kept a couple of them to the side for display. I would hate to lose something that had been tied by my favorite fly tier. But they are such great flies that I find myself torn on whether to fish them or not!

  3. Great post and beautiful fish. No fish is more beautiful then a brook in full spawning colors.

  7. Fran knew how to tempt trout, that's for sure ! Very nice stream and a lovely picture of the brook trout. Your pictures always have a vibrancy in the colors, do you edit your pictures or is that what your camera produces ?

  8. Kev2380,
    Thanks.
Not only are they buggy, they float like corks.

    Mark,
    Thanks.
That man was a master at buggy flies.
There's no editing on the pics, the camera does it, as long as I can hold it steady.

  11. Great fly that Ausable Wulff. I've still got a few of Fran's Muskrat Nymphs. I use them at certain times and like to think Fran would appreciate that.

  12. I have been following your blog ever since I stumbled upon it accidentally then realized you are a fan of Frans flies. Looks like a real gem of a spot. My biggest decision when fishing a new brook trout stream is witch fly to choose the Ausable Wulff or the Ausable Bomber!

    Thanks.
And that is a tough decision to make. Both very good flies.

    Fly Waters Edge-Kevin,
    Thanks.
It's an easy pattern to tie, don't worry how they look, they will fish fine.

  16. What stream is this? I recently moved to NYC-Brooklyn and am looking for some close (access mostly by train) to a small stream where I can do some fishing. I need to escape the city soon, it is killing me! Any thoughts?
