Super Day Alternative

Well if you were not aware of it yesterday was Super Bowl Sunday. To many this is one the years greatest holidays, and is celebrated with everything imaginable.
This past week with so much coverage of the event, it becomes a bit tough to take and by Saturday I was at the point where one more useless fact about the game would put me over the top.
So Sunday morning Jeanette said why don't we take a hike along that little stream, what stream I said. You know that stream, that little stream in the woods with those rock walls and mountain laurel, oh that stream I said. Well we put a few things together and off we went.
The stream was beautiful, flowing like crystals out of the hills. A water temp showed it was cold, 38 degrees cold. I knew it was going to be tough getting one of its residents to come to the fly, and I was right. Several flies failed to bring any interest. The lack of activity from the fish, along with icing of the guides told me to give this day to the stream.
We continued to walk the woods and took many wonderful photos,  and stopped to have a lunch on a rock close to the running water.
So as this "Super Sunday" in the woodlands of Connecticut came to a end, I realized my mind had been cleared of all that Hype.

Flowing crystal

Lunch....chili and.

I also tied a streamer in the morning. I haven't given it a name yet, maybe "Super Hype"

  1. Hi, nice pictures of a nice outing I presume. Lovely small running water. Sadly all the streams here are frozen right now. But I'll be sure to take some pictures of some nice small streams this season. A suggestion for a name for your lovely fly: "Purple Dream". I think that would suit that beautiful fly. I think your choice of spending the day was a really good one. I've lived in the US and now what happens when The Super Bowl is on the air.
Have fun tying more beautiful flies,
    M.O.

  2. The hype, the ads and the half-time show all diminish the excitement of the game, IMHO. A walk in the woods is always a great way to clear the garbage our brains are forced to sift through on a daily basis. Another beautiful streamer.

  3. LOL- I did the same thing Alan, when to Upcountry for new fly line and spent the day outside with my boys. Although, it was a heck of a game. You could pay homage to Jimi Hendrix and call that streamer the "purple haze"...

  5. Brk Trt,
though I did watch the game, I'm with you on all the hype that we had to take all week. I think you had the right idea with your hike & lunch with your wife.
As far as the unnamed streamer? How about calling it "The escape"
When I go and tye the few flies that I do tye, that is just what I mentally do, escape. When you finish with those that you do tye, you come out refreshed. I think thatname would be a dandy.....DRY

  6. two weeks from the last game to the super bowl is too much. Gives the dang media way to much time to come up with useless drivel. The game was good though. I too had to get away from it all Sunday and hit the woods in search of shed antlers. Amde the game that much more enjoyable. Another amazing Streamer. I like Dryflyguy;s name - "The Escape"

  7. Love the fishing/lunch combo posts Brk Trt..sadly there's just enough ice around here sticking on rocks and riverbanks to make it too treacherous for me. And we really don't have any open season small stream fishing available yet. Just have to hang in for another 8 weeks until it starts up again but reading your blog sure does help pass the time.

  8. Hi Alan.....I did the same thing (i.e. avoided the pre-game garbage and went fly-fishing in a local river). As for the unnamed fly, there are some good suggestions but Purple Haze struck me.

  12. The Jassid Man,
    Thanks.
Purple Dream, it has a nice ring.

    RKM,
    Thanks.
In the woodlands and along the streams there is no "hype" because it's all real and does not need it.

    Steve,
    Thanks.
It was a good game no question about it.

  13. DRYFLYGUY,
    Thanks,
That time that was spent outdoors was certainly worth it. Good choice for a name.

    Passinthru Outdoors,
    Thanks.
Looking for sheds, another great way to continue the hunt. Hope you find some.

    penbayman,
    Thanks.
A slip on that shelf ice could really cause problems. April 1st hurry.

  14. Ed,
    Thanks.
Fly fishing a great way to take the edge off that media bombardment. Another Hendrix vote.

    Savage,
    Thanks.
    We did for sure.

    Sanders,
    Thanks.
Neither your Broncos or my Cowboys graced the field, but it was a good ending.

    Johnny Utah,
    Thanks.
    I appreciate the comment.
