"Dog Days Bounty"
This time of year, the dog days of summer, are upon us. As far as cold water fishing there are not many choices out there, a few tailwaters, but the small streams are pretty much shut down til cooler waters prevail. I have a few I can still fish, they are holding 63 degree water, but with low water the trout are very cautious, you have to bring your AAA+ game with you to bring a wild one to hand.
This week I have fished and did a lot of recon. I have selected two thin blue lines I have not fished. These streams are located in both ends of Connecticut and I believe they hold wild trout. I'm planning on fishing one soon.
Summer also brings in some of natures bounty from local farms. These are potatoes from a farm in Newington. They are fingerlings, sliced and fried the same day they come from the earth.
You may look at these steaks and say ribeyes. They sure look like ribeyes, but they are chuck eyes. Well marbled, tender and flavorful. Rib eye 12.99lb, chuck eye, 5.99lb.
Grilled chuck eyes, and pork tenderloins.
I'm at the end of this post and I didn't mention the first photo. A wonderful cook book from LL Bean. It contains recipes of fish and game, along with many others. Many of these recipes can be substituted with other meats, and vegetables.

Thanks for the tip about the LL Bean book Alan (and the chuck eye).
ReplyDeleteI will have to see if I can find the book on eBay.

You'll love those chuck eyes. I think the book is out of print, bought mine years ago. I believe there are plenty of used ones about.
NICE! where did you score the blue potatoes????

I have a local farm in my home town of Newington. They grow them. Great taste.
It may be blasphamous to steak lovers but I prefer chucks over all else. Now my mouth is watering and its not even lunch time! Most people fatten up over winter but I'm getting heavy thanks to your food related posts! That streamer from the headliner, PERFECT! I'm more partial to imitative streamers than the attractors although both fish equally well, I can see that simple beauty hooking everything from Erie Steelhead to Virginia Browns!

Not only do grill nicely as a steak, you can grind them and it makes for the BEST ground beef.
I had quite a bit of jungle cock nails that were split. So I repaired them and made some streamers. They are simple as you say, which I'm all for.
This time I ate breakfast before I read your post Alan and it's a good thing. My wife is wondering what I'm doing in the nerve center of Northern California Trout that makes me rush upstairs and start gobbling food.

You can't go wrong.
It's just not right to post pictures of food looking that good before lunchtime!! Never had a purple potatoe , do they taste the same as normal tubers??
ReplyDeleteAnd I agree with Bill , Those streamers in your header are the "cats meow"!!

They seem to be the same as regular potatoes, but being harvested in the A.M. and eaten the same day make them taste so much better.
Such a nice tip you have organize on the Dog day. I think every people have to participate such kind of days and enjoy lots to make some fun.

You can't change the weather, so do what you can and enjoy it.
The Farmer's markets are one of the best parts of summer. I bet that steak was great
