Bemis
Bemis is located at the far end of Mooselookmeguntic Lake. It's an area that is quite special both from a angling perspective as well as a natural one. The stream is accessed from an old road that is still mostly dirt, and at certain times the ruts can make you feel your driving in mini canyons. The woods are teaming with wildlife, and deer, and moose are seen at any time. Early mornings loons can be heard, there sound is of a wilderness they inhabit.
There are areas just to the left of the lake that have not been changed and remain like they were when man first saw them. And from what I'm told they will be protected forever.
There is a stream that flows into Mooselookmeguntic lake. This stream is Bemis Stream. It's a stream that provides spawning habitat for the brook trout that live in the lake. In the fall there are places where one can fish a streamer and have the possibility of taking a four pound plus wild brook trout.
The section of AT that crosses here is one of the most rugged. The beauty that surrounds it is worth the trek.
A streamer I created. It captures my feeling for the woods, waters, solitude and the beauty of Bemis.

I tried to catch the beauty of the area in the colors. It's also ideal colors for brook trout.

ReplyDeleteUntouched areas that haven't been envaded by man is getting harder to find. I know you cherish that area. Have you fished the lake for trout? Would bank fishing be possible? That streamer is awesome, my son is still waiting to get the framed streamers you tied back from the frame shop. Thanks for sharing

Certain land trusts should keep it pristine.
I have fished the lake, and have taken some nice brook trout from it, not four pounders though. Every year they take quite a few. There are areas where you could fish from shore. There are lots of camps that have docks. Just after ice out the fish are very close to shore, and again in the fall as the water cools.
Looks like a stunning place Alan as is your streamer.

Beautiful place and a beautifully tied streamer as it's namesake.

I've been trying for years, and have had a hell of time trying.
Awesome streamer! Maine is on the list of possible relocation sites.

Jeanette and I thought about it too. But in Maine they have only two seasons, fishing and Winter, and she's not a fan of the second.
Hi Alan!
ReplyDeleteNice places to contemplate on whatever is on your mind while looking for a place to throw the fly. Lovely streamer! It looks as if it's on fire. Perhaps the trout will fire away after it when passing by them. Thanks for sharing!
Kind greetings,

I'd be happy to show you what I know.
Another beautiful Streamer! It's been a good day for tying flies but if I had my snowshoes here in CT I would have gone fishing today!

Tying and dreaming. If I had snow shoes I'd join you.
Looks like a beautiful place. A four pound wild brook trout would be something to behold I'm sure! The streamer is as beautiful as the area it was named after.

It's a wonderful area, not only to fish but to just walk about.
4 pounds were pretty common at one time.
Classic place, classic fly, classic post.

The Rangeley Lakes Heritage Trust has done a great job in preserving and protecting that area of Maine. To learn more go to : http://www.rlht.org/ Nice tie also.

I agree with that. They have preserved a great deal of land.
Wonderful organization. Thanks for posting the link.
Say the name of that lake three times quickly.

That's tough.
In a future post I'll tell how the name came to be.
