The third Saturday in April has always been the opening of trout season in Connecticut. It's a day of family fishing, old buddies getting together for a Spring tradition. A time of camping, early rising, coffee from the gas station, or loading up on carbs and cholesterol at the diner. They are the days of catching breeder trout, some of which can be quite large, and days when your children catch their first fish, and those days of standing in cold streams, shoulder to shoulder with other anglers waiting to fill there limit.
These days provide memories that will last a lifetime. So if you have the time, get out and make a few memories and enjoy.
For me opening day will start with a cup or two of Nantucket, black and hot. A bowl of oatmeal, with maple syrup and blueberries. I'll then find a small cold clear freestone stream to fish. Armed with a 2wt rod and a few flies I'll seek out the wild brook trout.
With a little luck I'll be graced to bring to hand a few wild jewels.
While out there be on the lookout for some land based wild beauty. This could be the weekend for these.

Sounds like a good plan Alan! Not a fan of the shoulder to shoulder scene with 5 gallon buckets all over the place full of fish. Nice shot of the trilium, one of my spring favorites. I guess we can say that spring is finally here.

I'll be out on Sunday. Going to visit a small stream in CT that hold wild browns & native brook trout. I also have a lead on a new to me CT stream that I've been told has wild rainbows. Can't wait to investigate. Enjoy your opening day my friend.

ReplyDeleteThis first time I ever heard of specific times for trout season, was when my son arrived in California back in March. He wanted to start trout fishing right after he got there, but was informed that the season was not open yet. It does open the last of this month there; he is looking forward to a trip soon. Those are some beautiful streams in the post. Thanks for sharing

Some TMA's and WTMA's are open all year. This opening is for the rest of the waters.
Hi, Alan. The others have already commented on how beautiful those Brook Trout are. In fact, that first one had me just staring at it for a minute or so! Just had to let you know. Opening Day is always anticipated even if it turns out to be crowded.
