I haven't tied a streamer in a while so the other day I sat down and put one together. I selected the materials I would need, sized the feathers, chose some nice Jungle Cock and began to tie. In tying streamers there are times when mistakes are made, these are usually minor and can be corrected generally with ease. But on this streamer the mistake could not be corrected, at least not with ease. As a matter of fact I did not see the "boo boo" til the fly was finished.
So what I'm going to do is let you find the mistake. And the one who picks out this pretty obvious mistake, I'll give you the fly. Hopefully someone will see it within a couple of days.

ReplyDeleteit looks like there isn't any lower feather for the cheek below the hook division on the side view thats being photographed. I don't tying streamers, so its just a guess..............Phil

ReplyDeleteIt would still probably be a good streamer to fish for trout. They aren't that discerning, are they? It doesn't appear to have the hackle wings correctly sized to match, and, the collar feathers look a little askew, too. I am not about to let you judge my flies if you have such an eye for detail, though. Still a very nice tie.

Aren't you usually tying these on a hook with a much longer shank?
ReplyDeleteI disagree with all the above...I think.....it might be...you showed us you have 3 diff wings.....some cheek and some jungle 4 the eyes..its about the wings....the orange, dark brown and turkey ....the turkey...or smaller wing feather should've been the last one applied...its hidden and should "ride" on top being the shortest wing feather.....just a guess...
ReplyDeleteMy comment is along the lines of flyfisher, I think you meant to have the darker color wing applied first and then the lighter color so that the dark wing feather adds the right underneath coloring to the orange wing feather. That would be my guess
ReplyDeleteThe boo boo made on this streamer was the wrong size hook. I had several hooks on the table and the one I picked for the photo was not the one I was going to use for the fly. Some how they were mixed up and the streamer got tied on a smaller hook.

Sorry....I couldn't find the mistake. I have yet to see a fly or streamer on this site that I would not fish or want in my fly box. If it will catch fish (or fisherman) there would be no such thing as a mistake.
