The "Stayner Ducktail" and more.
The Stayner Ducktail is a streamer created by Ruel Stayner of Idaho. It was originally designed to be fished in lakes, which it does very well. But over the years this fly has been sized down and was introduced to rivers targeting trout. Again the fly out did itself. The Stayner Ducktail has quite a following in other places throughout the world. New Zealand comes to mind, the Ducktail has taken some memorable fish.
I have fished this fly a few times since first tying it about 10 days ago and have been successful catching trout each time. I have tied it in size 10, because I fish small streams and that seems to be the perfect size. The fly presents a perfect silhouette of a forage fish when wet. More about the Stayner Ducktail can be found at Mel Moore's blog "The Pond Stalker"
If you want to tie one here's the recipe...........Hook, any good streamer hook, size 10....Tail, orange saddle hackle fibers....Body....the original called for olive chenille but I used olive yarn which worked just fine....Rib, flat gold tinsel....Throat, orange hackle fibers....Wing, mallard flank feather.
Allen Fly Fishing has some wonderful items for the fly tyer and fly angler. I have purchased these items and I'm putting the test to them. The hooks I've not used yet, but the fly line and the furled leaders have been great.
The leaders turn over very well, the best I've seen.
This is their lowest priced fly line. The Compass series. It's a WF, Floating 3wt. It has a welded front loop, very slick and moves through the guides easily. There is almost no line memory and I use a English Battenkill conventional reel. It comes in a peach color similar to the old Cortland lines.
a baby yellow-perch....yum....says all the fishies...make sure to tie a couple with some added weight....for those 5-or-so deeper pools... :)

What I like is they will ship the hooks for free. Good way to do business.
That is a beautiful fly and seems a breeze to tie. Thanks for the post.

It is quite an easy tie, and the materials are inexpensive.
Alan, thanks for the shout out to my blog, and, the Stayner Ducktail. It sure has a wonderful history. I like them in sizes 6 12. Mostly though, in size 8 or 10. I am also very fond of Allen hooks and other gear.

I'm going to tie up a few larger ones...6 and 8.
I love the histories of flies, particularly streamers.
I'm thinking the Stayner Ducktail would be awesome out here. The green and orange coloring is a good Nor Cal attractant.

I would agree with you on that Mark.
Give them a shot.
Another streamer to try. Thanks.

I would say yes......I haven't tried them in and all brookie stream, but soon.

ReplyDeleteWhen and if I start tying my own flies the streamer is what I think I will begin with-------awesome colors and the pattern styles is what makes the streamer attractive to me, not to mention it's catch ratio. Really impressed with your work on these streamers---thanks for sharing

They would be a good fly choice to begin tying. The simple patterns do catch fish.
Beautiful looking streamer, I'm going to have to try that one!

They are effective Will.
I've been following you for quite a while Alan and I'm always amazed at the beautiful flies you come up with.

Sorry for the late reply.
I had an inspiration from the "pond stalker"
I like Allen Fly Fishing products. It' a shame they get confused with Allen Co, which makes some cheesy cheap stuff.

Sometimes the same name can hurt. But people realize soon enough who's who.
What a lovely thought.

Sorry for the late reply Capt.
I'm truly feeling good that so many have found some enjoyment in the book.
I'm not a word master, but a good photo can say so much.
