Two weeks ago we had the pleasure of baby sitting "Parker". Well he did not like the term babysitting so we changed that to Parker's Vacation. Parker is a rescue dog and is 99% Lab. He is the most loveable fellow one would like to know. When he visits Nana and Papa he is king. He has breakfast with us and loves bacon and eggs, and french toast, don't forget extra butter and a tad of real maple syrup. Most times he has his choice of supper additions of chicken, and ground beef mixed with his dog food. I made him some venison stew and he ate all the deer and left the veggies.
Another highlight of his vacation is swimming and chewing the hell out of the sticks he's sent to fetch. And he also gets a brand new bandana. Given the choice of red or blue he couldn't decide so out he came with both.
Parker is a very laid back fellow. When you go he follows when you sit he sits, but if sitting takes a few minutes it quickly leads to laying down and that leads to a good solid nap. We love you Parker.
Another pleasure Parker enjoys is Nana's daily hair brushing. One day I noticed the hair being brushed off looked to be something I might be able to use in fly construction.
Black Lab dubbing. Natural fibers, no additives.
A brace of black lab wet flies. I have not tried these as of yet, but will indeed. "The Parker Specials" so named after a special family member.
oh, i LOVE this post! not only for that adorable boy (whom i'd have to keep if i ever babysat him) but also that you incorporated his hair into flies!!! so cute!!!

We have started adoption proceedings. But there is one stumbling block, his real family.
Agree with TeX.. Love the idea of using his fur this way, would you have any use for a load of white springer spanial hair? I have loads wafted around my abode as Bear moults.

No thanks John. We had Brittany spaniels for years and I know just how much hair they can provide.
That's perfect, Alan! I did the same thing with my lab and some of the wool that came off the new rug on the porch. Nothing like scrounged supplies.

Improvise, can't get black bear use black lab. Rug wool you say..........
Parker sure looks content too me. The Parker Specials I bet will work just fine. Good looking wet flies or soft hackles. I love Black Labs!

Mel he's so good that he's content sleeping on a catus.
I think I'll frame the flies for him and place them above his bed.
That is a great post.

I appreciate your comment Mark.
Wow. I dig it. Great that you're able to bring Parker fishing with you!

Never thought of that...thanks Mike.
That's great Alan! :) I've made some flies with hair from our Flat-Coated Retriever as well. It's been a touch and go week with our 12 year old dog. Got some good news last night that the tumor in his nose is not cancerous, vet is working on a way to shrink it. Hoping for the best outcome.

Small victories first. I'm putting forth a good word for that 12 year old.
The last time I was thinking about taking some of the tail fibers from my boarder collie, my wife gave me one of those "what are you up to" looks. The original version of the sunray shadow used boarder collie.

I got the same looks too. I asked my grand daughter if I could have some of the hair on Parker's tail and she said no.
Brk Trt,
ReplyDeleteall I can say is I love this post.
Enjoy Parkers company for hopefully many years to come....................Phil

He's a great companion, and he will be with us for some time.
Those Parker Specials seem especially attractive and well-named.

I agree with you Walt.
Good looking wets.

You don't think they're doggy looking, do you?
I'd say more "buggy" than "doggy."
Deletessj, agreed.
DeleteLove the flies.. I look at my gf's cat and just see dubbing similar to a hare.

It's crazy just to throw it out. Grab some and tie up a few patterns and give them a try.
Alan
ReplyDeleteParker can please in more ways than one--thanks for sharing

He does that well.
I have bags of my dogs sheddings. They tie a mad nymph.

I see there are a lot of folks who think the same way.
Maybe we should blend them and market them..........
