Farmington River, "Klags Run".....6-29-16

This is a short report about a fabulous few hours on the Farmington River. I'm going to let the photos tell the story and toss in a few words here and there.

When I got there fish were rising, but none were taken a dry flies.

"Mini-Buggers", white in particular seemed to attract.

I'm going to name this "Klags Run"...Adam does it look familiar?

A couple of these today, this one fought like a steelhead.

The pretty lady ran, jumped, ran, and battled to no end. Notice the barbless hook, it held. I can't say enough good things about these hooks, a report on them coming soon.

This is how the CGR 5'9" 3wt looked all morning.

A tasty morsel to some.

Interesting tail on this one.

It was good this day...more to come.

  4. Beautiful, Alan, just beautiful! Soft Hackles are an amazing fly pattern. Is that a touch of Yellow for the body or is it a Cream color? Those Rainbows were something to behold. Carry on, my friend..................

  6. Now THAT is my kind of water, Alan! Reminds me a little of one stretch of the Blackfoot River in Montana, or a couple of places on the upper Wind River forks in Wyoming. Brookies and 'Bows... Ah. I think I felt a rise in dopamine just from imagining I'm fishing there. I'd love to visit Krag's Run someday!

John it was great to fish with you today. Although Klag's Run didn't give up the fish we still found some willing jewels. You were able to break in the new rod and take some trout on the dry fly.

  8. Alan, the mini bugger is a great fly this time of year with the small fish fry present because of various spawns the fish key on the young of the year, the bugger is a great reprisentitive.letort legend Ed shenk used to tie a mini marabou white streamer this time of year and catch some amazing fish. The theory was the small fly was representing a match the hatch scenario. Congrats on your part to match the prey the fish were keying in on.mini buggers work on all game fish this time of year.i use an olive with black tail for smallmouth on our local creek this time of year,it does very well. Thanks for the beautiful photos.

Brad that makes sense. I also used that mini-bugger over the weekend to take some great crappie and yellow perch. I was going to tie a few without the bead, and use a few wraps of no-lead wire for weight. And I will tie one with some holographic tinsel for the the body.

  9. Crappie love the holographic tinsel, I caught a citation crappie in a pond open to the public on a holographic tinsel mini bugger, I can still see that fish in my mind. The reason I can see it in my mind, I forgot my camera.
