The sub title of this blog is "for those who love small streams, wild trout and life....in their simplest form"... I hope you'll agree.
Thanksgiving we had the family gather for dinner. Lots to talk about, lots to eat and some football. While in the midst of these happenings our grand-daughter Morgan asked if the fly tying desk was operational to which I replied yes. She then proceeded to leave for a while, saying I'm going to tie a fly. Some time passed and she said '"what do you think".....showing us the fly she tied. It's a streamer that looks pretty simple, but. The wing is constructed using what's called a "complex wing" it uses multiple feathers layered in a fashion to create a beautiful pattern. I will fish this streamer as an attractor and believe it will take a few. What should it be named?
When I was growing up every Sunday after church the family would meet at moms house for coffee. Along with coffee there would always be various fresh rolls hot from the local bakeries. My favorite was the "horn", this odd shaped poppy seed covered horn was spread with butter and devoured with coffee. It has been a long time since those days. Last year I found a local bakery that continues to bake the "horn" as I remember. Light, delicate, lots of poppy seeds....simple elegance.
They also make a great sandwich.
I also enjoyed "horns". The Polish bakery, where I grew up also had them covered with heavy crystal salt, like pretzels. They were delicious. How about cheese and lekvar pastries, on Sunday mornings?

John these came from a fine Polish bakery in New Britain. Real good pastry is hard to find, again comparing them to what I enjoyed as a kid.
I think you should work Morgan's name into the fly. If that fly was in pink, the local Mt. Lassen trout would be all over it.

Mark that's going to be part of it. Pink is a good color to use here, especially in the winter.
Back in the day when I was still on the job, used to get a buttered horn and delicious coffee from the corner deli every morning!!Still get them today from Rocco's Bakery. That is a beautiful streamer, maybe Morgan's Fancy!!

Pete those were the days. I'm glad the bakery is still in business and keeping the "horns" alive.
My wife and I went to an Australia Day festival a few years ago where they had foods from many different migrant nationalities. The Polish food tent had bread rolls similar to the picture but topped with crystal salt. We had them filled with a spicy sausage and cheese, then followed this with with a jam filled "Polish Donut"--a solid, filling, creation not like the airy, fluffy things that we were used to. Washed down with a large mug of hot coffee, we were set for the whole day!

Steve your the second person to comment on salt on the "horns", to be honest I never heard of them. I'm very familiar with those Polish Donuts and they are awesome.
The first thing I thought of when I saw Morgan's fly was, it's a rooster. I love homemade bread. My mom used to make poppy seed rolls and loaves of bread. Luckily my wife also has that talent and baked plenty for the holiday.

Howard your a lucky man in that your wife bakes homemade. There is nothing finer then bread baking in the oven. As a matter of fact I have to fragrances for candle makers...baking bread, and roasting turkey.

Well, I love home made bread and the great smell that it brings as you open the door from being outside. I have never seen a "horn", but, have consumed many a bagel. I will look the next time I am at the bakery. Morgan's fly is name enough. I am interested in your fishing results with it.

Mel bagels are awesome, but these roll are much lighter but they do have that same crunch in their crust as a bagel.
We have been getting some beneficial rain the last say, might be able to give the fly a trial run.
Surely the fly should simply be called Thanksgiving?
