Good morning friends. This past week has been quite a ride for me here in "computer world" the ups and downs were to scale down even the nastiest coaster ride. Wednesday morning my PC crashed. I could not get anything to work. A day later I was advised to replace the 10 year old machine and I promptly did so. Once in operation I was now facing the loss of all my photos and everything else associated with my history on the old computer. Several days of trial and error I've managed to get some of my "stuff" back.
I was told that the "New" systems are as simple as can be, but I'm not convinced. Still I'm making progress and should be able to post a an actual fly fishing related story soon. I ask that you be patient and keep your fingers crossed. Thanks, Alan.

I'm far from an IT expert, but if you're really faced with losing stuff that's irreplaceable, I think there are people who can salvage whatever is on your hard drive.

Bill believe it or not I'm finding stuff little by little. Hopefully I can find someone who will find the rest.
I use Google Photos to automatically backup all my photos. Easy and "limitless."
ReplyDeleteI would highly recommend this as well. I like to have my photos on my machine, but I also upload them to Google Photos for cloud storage, just in case something like this were to happen. Glad to hear you've recovered some of what you lost.

ReplyDeleteI feel your pain, happened to me years ago. Since then I've been using an external hard drive to store everything on the C-drive. I usually save everything once every month unless I forget. So far I haven't had any mishaps.
Once use older guys get use to using a certain system and the technology changes it can be a pain. One example of what I'm talking about is the constant messages I keep getting from Google to change to Chrome which I annoy because I am use to using the standard system---you can't teach an old dog new tricks. Alan, I feel your pain! I've been through this so many times I have nightmares about it. Save your old hard drive, a good IT expert should be able to save what's there. Back up photos to Google Photos. (as much as I hate Google!)There are programs to back up copies of the blog and other things. Technology sucks. I refuse to give up on my Windows Vista!

Computer loss is devastating. I've been there and now backup all my photos. So sorry. But, those pancakes look delicious!!

Emily I have managed to save most of them and the hope is I'll get the rest back.
Blueberry pancakes are my #1 comfort food.
Brutal... Hope it works out Alan. Computers are great but frustrating too. Consider backing everything up on a portable hard drive going forward, and possibly even paying for a service like carbonite (or similar) which basically stores your system remotely - so if you crash, you can get things back in multiple ways... Redundancy is good :)

Will I know 0 about these things, luckily my son is available and has helped me a lot.
Backup, like going fishing with more than one fly.
Here is the only advice I can give you, being married to a computer tech, is have an external hard drive. Ours is a bazillion gig. Remember, she's a computer person and she knows all about his stuff. My computer dies, and they all do eventually, everything is on the external drive. I don't store anything on my laptop. Best I can offer.

Wait a minute....thinking hard....this has to do just with your photos in storage on your machine....regardless, we want the total package protected for sure!
