I moved onto the other side of the log and tangled with this lady.

Making The Best Of It
Fishing has been a hit or miss situation this early spring. For the most part conditions on the days I've ventured out have been OK. As far as weather issues and water conditions I can not complain, well maybe a little, with the wind that is. As far as catching is concerned the score has been mostly disappointing. I contribute this to the night time temperatures. Nights have allowed the mercury to fall below freezing and the daytime temps take awhile to rebound, this makes for slow insect activity as well as very little fish feeding.
It was my last outing on Saturday that I finally found active fish. It was afternoon when I located some small brookies that were willing to take a starling and purple soft-hackle. This fly worked probably because of the small stoneflies that were about. That little frenzy lasted about a half hour and then shut off.
Moving down a bit I fished a great run. I managed to bring a fish close to hand but it was not to happen.
Luckily she did not free herself, judging by the way she is hooked a mere shake and he would have been gone. So as we move on into April, hopes are high.
Well Sir, you got out on the water, cast a cane and silk & avoided a skunk. I would say win-win. :)

Ralph a win for sure. The Cane and Silk handled it well.
Very nice Rainbow Alan... we are flooded here with high waters in my home creek. Looking forward, things will only get better....

Doug, the rainbow is an oddity in that stream.
Rain, snow melt has a lot our waters not fishing well.
Not sure how that fish stayed on. Nice post.

Kevin when I brought her in I could see she was not hooked well, that's why I left her in the water. I knew if I tried to pick her up I would have lost her.
Very interesting yellow coloring or is it just an optical illusion?

Mark I think the color was not how the camera saw it.
Pretty though.
Nice pictures Alan and at least you got out. We need the snow, rain, and cold weather to give it a break especially on weekends. I do plan to partially retire in a couple of weeks and perhaps fully retire June 1st - either way more opportunity to have free time when the weather is good. By the way, and I have probably said it before, but the Snipe & Purple is one of my Spring favorites.

Pat I fish when I get the time, so the weather be damned. I would prefer normal April temps.
It's great to hear of your retirement, I know you'll enjoy it.
very nice Alan, Im climbing the walls here as not been out in 9 weeks so you are very fortunate.

Wow mate, 9 weeks, I feel sorry for you.
You'll be a terror when the time comes.
An exquisite creature and a joy to see. Many thanks. John

John rainbows possess a beautiful range of colors.
Well done catching that pretty rainbow, Alan. When in the world will spring get to our region? Not in the near future the weatherman is telling me. I'm going fishing this weekend anyway regardless of how cold it is.

Sam get out there, you never know. I was planning a trip to a few Mass. streams, but not with these temps.
Sox played a great game today....very happy in CT.
6 and 1. Great ninth inning to tie the game up and win in extra innings. Starting pitching has been great so far.

ReplyDeleteCold fronts and nights can be one of the main factors that can cause fish to become dormant. I'm looking forward as you are to more stable weathers patterns. Thanks for sharing

Bill it has been crazy here. The swings are tough.
Now they're calling for snow. But better days are coming I'm certain.
A good first day! Spring has been very wet here in UK with rivers over the banks but hopefully in next few days they will be fishable. Hope you have a good season, regards, Colin

Colin I've recieved reports from several UK readers and they all say the same, where's spring.
You have a great season also, and let us know of your ramblings.

Alistair I really feel sorry for you guys. It's one thing when the season is closed and you can't fish. But when it's open season and the weather won't be your friend, keeping you off the water, now that's frustrating.
Fingers crossed for you.
