An Autumn Mosaic

I spent about five hours on a small stream yesterday. It was a beautiful day once the clouds broke and it was one of those days where everything went right. The stream was running almost at capacity, clear crisp water, I mean it sparkled like diamonds. I spent more time taking in the scenery than I did fishing, now that may not be entirely true but it was close. Looking into the stream the colored leaves seem to jump right at you, and when placed against the cobble bottom it look like a mosaic...natures mosaic.

The trees are in various stages of color change, some gold some red, there is also that clump of green in there.

The brook trout are not to be outdone. Many colors present along the body of this one.

I wish I could capture to true colors of this leaf jam. They were so vibrant with the riffled water flowing over the top....a few inches below that jam a willing brookie took a dry fly.

The fly...it's colors are that of fall.

Could fishing get any better? This angler says no..

This fly did reasonably well in it's first outing.

days to come...

Beautiful images, especially the leaf pictures that could grace the wall of any den. Did the trout take the fly subsurface or surface? Thanks for sharing

Bill the camera doesn't capture the actual beauty of those images. Most of the fish were taken on the surface, but a few were tempted to take that naked fly.

  2. Amazing pics... I'd love to blow up the first and last and frame them, or have them put on framed canvas as decorations. Amazing!

  6. I agree -- fall is decidedly the prettiest time of the year. It does not hurt the season's reputation IMO that trout are cooperative then. Those colored-up brookies are breathtakingly beautiful.

Bill the brookies have been so aggressive. The rises have been vicious, it's like they haven't eaten before.
      The colors are breathtaking.

  7. Magical, this time of year. The only problem for me is deciding what I should fish for... everything is good!

  12. Alan, you captured the fall colors so well with both fish and scenery. A much appreciated sight having recently arrived home again from crowded city environments. While driving, I find myself looking at little blue lines wondering if brook or brown trout might live in them. I bet some do have trout.

    Best Regards, Sam

Sam many of those little blue lines to have trout. While they may not be large or many of them most are content with carving out a life in not the most fertile of environments. It's the weekend Sam slow down and relax.
