A familiar scene in many of my posts |
Yesterday I met with Rowan (CT. Fly Angler) for some small stream fishing. It has been some time since we last fished together so the ride to the stream made for some good and informative talk. The day was really nice with sunshine and mild temps. The stream we had chosen was one that we both are familiar with. It has all types of water from wicked fast to long slow pools. We started fishing at the upper end, and quite frankly that is where we should have stayed. It was there where we had most of our success. In that area Rowan caught 2 brookies and some fallfish. I managed but one lone brookie. I fished a multitude of flies but that wasn't necessary for we both came to the conclusion that the heavy rains of the late summer and fall had changed the stream. There were some massive trees that washed in and down, these trees took out many productive pools. In one area we both talked about a very large boulder that had been moved by the heavy flows.
We had fun though and that's a big part of small stream angling. As I type this it's pouring rain outside, and they predict 2-3 inches. Hold on fellows.
Rowan stalking the stream near the red barn.
My only fish of the day. A brook trout which was in fantastic shape. It took a Gartside Sparrow.
The fishing was the highlight of the day but the bowl of hot venison stew was a very close second.
The stew looks tasty good Alan. We've had unusually nice weather here in NM. Fishing has been really productive.

Bill that's great to hear. Lot's of rain here, but that's better than snow.
Well that good weather is at an end, 3-5" next week with temps in the 20's. It sure was fun though.
DeleteOne's better that a skunk. Stew looks yummy.

John so true. They would be missing so much if they did.

ReplyDeleteI can relate as for the rain, you all are getting all the rain we had here for the past couple of days. Glad you and Rowan made a trip before more rain will probably change the streams even more. Thanks for sharing

Bill the rain has the coffers filled to the max. It will come in handy though.
A day with a true friend is a day well spent; a wild trout and home-made stew put on the trimmings.

Bill a little bit of everything that created a big day.
Alan, what a great picture of the stream with the red barn in the background. You may have only caught one, but that brookie is a beauty. I am glad you and RM had a good day outdoors.

Sam that barn has been in many of my posts over the years. The fish were few but they were pretty.
Oh, and that venison stew looks really good, and a fitting meal after a good day.
ReplyDeleteSam it was good, filling and all natural.
DeleteI had some rye bread to go with it.
Alan, in my opinion there is nothing like good rye bread to go with stew like that, or ham and bean soup which is in my future a few days after Christmas dinner.
DeleteHi Alan
ReplyDeleteThat is a nice looking stream and an even better looking brookie......
It is a shame nature works against our fishing sometimes, on the Leven a few years ago a favourite pool of mine was taken out by a log jam for a couple of seasons . However it did offer protection to the next few generations of fish for a while so was ok by me.

Alistair that's the positive from these weather event changes. The pools that are changed are usually used to achieve good results.
