I just want to pass along some of my future plans...first off I'm still fishing and I have a few reports coming. The weather here has been cold and in the next few days winter will provide us with some snow. I don't mind winter but it takes it's time going away. Well not to dwell on winter to long we have much to do here at SSR's including tying flies, making plans on future outings and getting my stuff organized.
Small flies. I'm going to try fishing the little flies, 18 and 20's. I probably would go smaller but if you can't see them why try.
This is one stream that is on my "must try list"...I have checked it out several times even fished it once. But a concentrated effort to find out what actually lives here must be made.
So before the white stuff flies maybe I'll get one more outing in.
Oh by the way in 27 days pitchers and catchers report for Spring Training....first game Feb. 22nd.
Amen! ...to everything you just said. As soon as pitchers and catchers report I can almost see the end of winter. Love those small flies, Alan. Nicely done.

Will it's only been a few months since the Sox won the W.S. but I'm ready for a new run. All of the above have been taking place here.
Great small flies, Alan. #16 is as small as I go, and for my aging eyes hard enough to tie on and get out of a trout. I have read that some anglers on the Swift drift #28 flies on 8X tippet and they connect, but that is not to my liking to fish.
ReplyDeleteSox Pitchers and catchers reporting to Ft. Myers in 27 days is a sure sign of spring not being far off. Stay safe with a nor'easter coming our way this weekend. I covered up an old pile of firewood tonight just in case we lose power.

Sam I'm in the same boat as far as eyesight go's. But in warmer weather I can take the time to tie one on and that cold won't be the obstruction. #28 flies require 8x, but will that hold a fighting fish? Well I won't go to #28's for sure.
My weather guesser this AM said 6-8 with an icy crust. Firewood, and plenty of coffee.

ReplyDeleteI am planning on a few more winter Grayling trips on the river Tees before the end of their season in mid March. There’s a weeks gap then it is the start of the Trout season. I will probably head for the Leven on opening day as I barely fished her waters last seasons because of the drought!
No Baseball here but our football (soccer) season runs through winter into May (hopefully Middlesbrough will still be in the promotion places for the Premier League), however spring only arrives when Yorkshire CCC take to the cricket pitch at the end of March for a friendly against the local universities!

Grayling are a fun fish to have available to you in your trout off-season. Lets hope your rain gods will be kinder to you this year.
I've seen baseball is a tough sell in the U.K. but you folks seem to enjoy the N.F.L......sports in general are a positive for everyone
That's a fairly good sized stream by your normal standards, Alan. Wonder if it will require a different approach from your usual downstream trek?

Bill I know there will be a lot more fishing from the bank. The area of the photo is about as wide as that stream is. Downstream it tends to get a bit smaller. I must practice.
Keep the Minnesota and the Wisconsin Driftless on your to do list. The weather here is going to shut me down for a few weeks, but since I already got out 4 times, I can live with that. I love baseball and played it for many years. Have a great time at Spring Training.

A new season, new ideas, places, tactics and experiences. Many reasons for us to get charged up. Plain white fluffy snow is a pleasure. Wintry mixes not so.
We had a beautiful day here in NM yesterday. Fished up to about 7500 ft. in the mountains with no ice. Game and Fish has not been reporting stockings which keeps the crowds down.

Bill nice report from N.M....when you are able to fish ice free in Jan. you can't beat that.
When the Brewers were in the American league they played the Sox many times. I remember some great games played between both clubs.
And I remember one in Milwaukee where the Brewers were ahead 12-3 in the top of the 8th. Wife and I left since it was getting late. As we left to go to the car we could hear groans. And they blew a 9 run lead!

I think I did a report on this stream once before. I'll check the archives. The wife and I hiked the trail that borders the stream in places and I saw several nice trout in there. A real cold trib comes into the stream also.
Alan, That even looks a larger stream than normal! We've had two hard frosts and snow is on the way, or so the Weather Men say, and there's ice on the river. Good to see another Middlesbrough supporter in your comments column. All the best, John

John the stream is on the wide side in the area I want to fish. There are a few breaks where it almost looks like a small pond. So winter has finally made itself known in your area. I'm not sure who the Middlesbrough supporter is? Anyone care to identify?

ReplyDeleteJust letting you know that I am Anonymous who commented about the width of the stream-------I am having problems signing into my blog account because I'm not using my computer. I am using my wife's computer, because I left my computer in Tennessee at my daughters house over the weekend. I will not get it back for two weeks which is like losing my wallet!!!
There are five different accounts sign-ins on her computer, which is her business computer, talk about confusing!!
