A New Light, And A Simple Fly
I was in Joann's the other day and as I was walking down one of the aisles I spotted a great sale. The OttLite was being offered at 50% off. I got the rusty calculator, my brain, and figured it out. Regular retail 65.99 at 50% off equals 32.99. And here it sits on my desk. I'm very pleased with it so far. It puts the light directly on the target. It is compact and does not generate a lot of heat. I was in need of a new light and sometimes it feels good when deals happen when most needed.
The pheasant and orange...simplicity to the max. Orange silk, burnt orange SLF thorax and pheasant hackle. I'm going to have to look into Smith's book The North Country Fly and see if pheasant was a hackle that was preferred and used by the old masters. I love working with it and it has been working very well on the brookies.
The light looks great on you desk. Glad it's working out.

So far all is good. That light just may improve my fly tying.
My wife says I should buy a new light, too. She thinks my current one looks like road kill and she's not wrong. I don't know, I have an emotional attachment to that old light and besides, the closest Joann Fabrics is 3.5 hours south in Bangor. It looks good on your bench, though.

"Road kill" I like that. It is hard to let go sometimes..but. That's a long ride buddy.
Your new light and Regal vise are in a heck of a lot better shape than mine Alan. Years of Steelhead, SM Bass and saltwater flies will do that I guess. :-)

Bill the Regal is now 18 years old...the jaws are chipped but it still holds on. The best fly tying vise made.
Hey there Brk Trt, that light looks great. Just an FYI. I looked online at joann's. they have that light at $32.99 as well. On top of the marked down 50% off, there is a coupon code at the top "July25" and you'll get an additional 25% off which ends up being extra $8.25 off so the grand total discounted price of $24.75
ReplyDeleteIf you end up having it shipped, that extra 25% or $8.25 will cover the $7.99 shipping cost.
Online says, Pittsfield mass store which is out by me has 5 in stock, so with all the discounts, for $25.00 I might have myself a new light. Lord knows I need all the fly tying help I can get!!!........Phil

Phil you are awesome. I have said many times we have the best followers of any blog out there. So Mike here's your chance to get a new lamp and do away with your "road kill" one.
Phil how are the stream conditions up your way?
Looks like a great light and a good price! I see those "pheasant" and orange flies are still doing their magic!

Mark some of the lamps I have been checking out at the fly shops on line are real pricey. I needed one because my gooseneck one I own had lost it's ability to stay where I put it. Then I saw this one, price was right so....
Soft-hackles seem to work well most times they are called into service.
Alan, good score on your new lamp. Mine is only a 13w fluorescent, but is still a heater. I've been wanting the Regal lamp and suppose it'll be a Xmas splurge for little'ol me. I agree with you regarding Regal vises. A customer of mine gave me his old pre-medalion clamper vise when he upgraded to a new rotary vise. Sounds like mine is in similar condition as yours, and it holds well. A quality vise is a life changer. Cheers.

Matt this one is a 13 watt lamp too, but the heat given off is hardly noticed. Yes the Regal vise is a true value. I saw a youtube video on the history of Regal, quite interesting. I was going to by a midge jaw, for tying the small spiders. A fly tyer at one of the shows told me it was not necessary. He showed me how to adjust the vise and I can tie 22's if I desire.
I love my Regal. The midge jaws are worth trying. They just have a smaller profile than the standard jaws that I like.
