Here are three versatile flies that have been working quite well for me as of late. They consist of silk thread bodies, double dubbed thorax, and hackle. The fly is tied so that it is equally effective as a dry fly or a wet fly.
It is amazing how the hackles move in the water. The hackle used is somewhat stiff, not as stiff as a genetic rooster hackle and not as soft as hen or game bird hackles.
The fly is dubbed and then the hackle tied in. A second dubbing is applied and the hackle is wound and tied off.
Although I have seen very few of these light Cahills about the streams I fish this fly is still producing.

Potato pancakes are real good, but a bit of a hassle to make.
That's the box with triangular holes and precut slots in a silicone insert where the hooks go. No foam tearing and it seems to hold the fly solider. Downside is the box is twice as heavy.

Rick the hook is a Firehole Stick, 320 size 12. These are great hooks and super reasonable. They can be purchased directly from Firehole or other online shops.
Sour cream is a good choice....I like applesauce.

ReplyDeleteI'm so impressed with the orange hackle fly, what impresses me about all these flies is they can be used as dries as well. Just curious do you add float-ant to the flies when you fish them as a dry? Thanks for share

Bill I fish them as a dry but without floatant. I false cast to dry the fly and allow it to drift. When the current draws the fly under water I'll then fish it as a wet fly.

Joe all pancakes have an appeal and are such comforts. But I think potato pancakes are at the top.
Hi Alan, If you don't mind what hook are you tying these on? It looks to have a small curve leaning to a curved nymph or scud hook.

Kurt they are a scud-pupa type hook. I like Firehole Sticks, size 12.
