Friday was the last day of September, and from the weather forecasts it was going to be about the best day. I have become a fair weather angler over the last few years, unless I'm at a distance from home and it's my last shot to fish.
So off I went to fish a small blue line in a large tract of state forest land. Bow season for deer is at hand so some precaution was taken, an orange hat in place.
The stream was in wonderful shape, full, and flowing to perfection. The signs of change are appearing on the slow side with the leaf change, with minimal color. In time I suppose it will catch up.
The brookies were very aggressive and hit the flies well, all though when they seem to slash at the fly they miss it. I did manage a few to hand.
The brookies seem to prefer the areas around the nasty stuff..... which caused the loss of some ammo.
This is a fly I took interest in when I saw it in the mouth of a trout in a blog post from Erin at "Mysteries Internal". I asked what the fly was, and she said it was a "Clown Shoe Caddis", and was tied by her friend Jay. She posted a link to how it's tied and while mine is a bit different, cause I don't have the materials it worked great. I hope Jay doesn't mind the variant.... I'll tie it right as soon as I get the materials.
This brook trout is in peak color, and slammed the Clown Shoe Caddis alongside the birch log. I did proceed to loose that fly to the log.
So the last day of September proved to be kind to this fair weather angler.

ReplyDeleteA wet September it was, though we live in New England and we should be use to it by now. October has just begun, and those Fall colors we enjoy will be in full swing. I hope the Berkshire Mass. Brookies will be in full swing as well once the rivers & tribs recede.

September is finished, the trout season continues until the end of February.

Brk Trt, I agree with Erin, that is a great picture of the brookie on the leaves. I think that that fly definitely deserves a closer look and maybe a spot in my fly box. Thanks for the post.

Wow those pics are like being there in real life. The one of the trout on top of the leaves is awesome. I feel your pain with the losing of ammo :) Always worth sacrificing a few well tied flies. Tight lines.

The brook trout is a lot like me, simple and low tech.
Something about the Brook Trout and fall just go together. Though I suppose Brook Trout and spring are the same. Must be something about the transitional seasons and that amazing char.
