The Tryout

Well the other morning I took my streamer cross The Mickey Pinn to the stream to give it its maiden tryout. I wish I could say that it put in a stellar performance and brought many trout to hand. That was not the case. While it did manage to bring several hard hits, I only managed a single brown to hand. I have not given up on the Mickey Pinn just yet. I will modify it a bit and give it another workout.

The outing was a success in many ways though. I managed to have the chance to play hide and seek with this whitetail. It tried several times to cross the stream. It walked into the water, saw me and then retreated back into the high grass. This happened several times. Finally it realized I was not a threat and crossed the stream.

Wild flowers. A field full, all the same. This one with water droplets on its petals. Life is good.

So with the streamer in the box, I reached for my friend The Bomber. I tied it on and sent it off to search. Within minutes a brookie was at hand.

A beautiful Connecticut freestone stream.

And one of its jewels.

A "Bomber" brookie.

  1. I wouldn't worry about the Mickey Pinn....I can see many years of that fly bringing trout to hand. Even great flies have a bad day once in a while. Even with out the beautiful brookies I would easily say your outing was a success.

    1. Kiwi,
      Thanks.
I think your right. I'll give it a fair share of workouts. And a day on the stream is a success by its self.

I could see an indicator going out of sight in some of the slow pockets of that stream. Does a nymph produce at times? What is the deepest area in that stream? Beautiful stream!! Thanks for sharing

    1. Bill Trussell,
      Thanks.
Nymphs would work, but it's not my type of fishing. The stream has some spots that are thigh high or so. It's comfortable wading for the most part.

  5. I know that I have said this before Alan but I can't get over how many nice places there are to fish in CT. The other New England states (VT, NH)get all the headlines but people are missing out if they ignore CT. I know you like it that way.............

There are many streams here. There are a few that receive pressure but the ones I seek are pretty much left alone. And your right, that's how I like it.

Seems as though work gets in the way of a lot of our pleasures.

A fine place indeed. Certain fish like a tad bit of color. Given time we'll find them.
