The pool under the bridge
The lake...6000 acres of water with a depth of 150 feet. Many miles of beautiful shoreline with several tributaries. In the fall the trout and salmon look to spawn and seek these blue lines. This is when some of the finest angling can be had.
This one of the tributaries. Brook trout migrate to find the perfect place to make their redds. They find out that accessing that certain place can be difficult. Movement depends on water levels and when rains fail to come the trout will lie in deep pools and wait.
This is one such pool. It lies just under a bridge. Looking down into the stream one can observe small trout, probably year round residents of the stream. From time to time you will see trout that are very large in relation to the residents. These are the lake travelers. They are waiting for a heavy rain that will allow them movement up into the areas they seek.
If the angler can place a streamer into the pool without to much noise and strip it back at the right speed he may be rewarded.

A fly angler I know once told me: "Never pass up a good bridge." :)

That angler probably knew what he was talking about.
Yes he does, he goes by the name BRK TRT. :)
DeleteIs that the big R lake? I know a similar bridge on the edge of the big U lake... 6 more weeks to that trip :)

That is the big "R". I'll be right behind you, well almost, the last week of September.
Enjoy your trip.

ReplyDeleteBeautiful area to fish, it would take some tight casting to reach all way under the bridge, or perhaps get that perfect drift. That lake is awesome. Have you fish the lake for trout? Really like the header image on the blog. thanks for sharing

The best way to fish that spot is from upstream. Let the streamer drift to the back of the pool, let it straighten out and then strip it back and hold on.
I have fished the lake many times. My next post is going to be about that same thing.
oh, that 2nd shot... *sigh*
ReplyDeleteloved your 'f word' comment today at my place. :)

It is one peaceful place. If you look close you'll see some apples hanging over the water. They're wild Mac's and they like the area are so sweet.
You have to love the 'F' word there.
Pools are good. Pools under bridges are really good. Pools under bridges with fish in them are really, really good.

You have them lined up oh so proper.
Bridge pools generally confound me. There's this one I fish. Trout are spooky as hell. And that pool lacks the rewards that yours has. Nice!

I guess the noise and movement generated from above will sometimes cause that. But they are like magnets to me.
Good advice on not passing up bridges. I'll be going later this week to one such place and I can't wait.

I'll be waiting that report.
Enjoy.
One of my favorite places to fish on a given stream is under the bridge where there is a good flow or run. Have taken a number of fun fish by hugging the bridge abutments.

It seems as if they provide a sense of security to them.
Love fishing under bridges Brk Trt..particularly the ones that don't have much car traffic..I guess trout like it there too..

Mike this is a less traveled road.
Just south of Rangeley.
No self-respecting fly fisherman can pass up a good bridge pool! Love the way the sun on the rocks almost matches the oranges and golds in that beautiful brookie in the last pic.

I for one certainly agree.
Looks like a place I'd love to spend some time. Nice Brookie pic! I had to read the previous comment to see the apples, awesome!

Spend some time, perhaps catch a fish, and enjoy them apples.
