Last week I got an email from Mike at Cane and Silk and it said this... "Hello Alan
I just want you to know you will be receiving a package within the next few days. Compliments of myself and my side rod business. This past year I started doing this twice a year for customers that I feel deserve this bonus. You are the winner for fall 2016 Please let me know if you have any questions once received.
Best regards
Mike"
Monday I received the package and this is what I found.
A 4'10" glass rod, for a 2/3 wt line. It is a translucent color "Ice" with rust colored wrappings. A wood reel seat along with engraved sliding band. Mike also included a silk fly line which is something I've read about but have never owned. The line is complete, ready to go on to the reel. Included is silk fly line dressing and a tapered leader. I did not put the silk line on choosing to wait until the Spring.
I have fished this rod twice now including a trip to Cape Cod fishing for "salters" and it has performed flawlessly.
Thanks Mike.
Brook Trout, I spoke of your rod in fiberglass flyrodders- one of the most beautiful rods I have ever seen. The rod seems fitting for a person whose blog starts my day most every day. Thanks for this great writing and photos .
ReplyDeleteWOW!! Awesome Alan!! Much Deserved. Congrats and thanks for sharing!!

Very nice little rod and a great owner who knows how to value their customers. I love dealing with small buisness owners. Check out another great business (Risen Fly).

Beautiful rod. I really like the white blanks.

Kevin that white blank shows a sort of crispness that blends so well with the wood real seat and hardware.
He does a great job.
I sent a comment to fiberglass flyrodders when the first post came out about these rods. the rods are simply beautiful. Thank you for sharing the pictures and for the great stories and pictures every day.

Do you have one of these rods?
They are beautiful indeed. The last one Mike sent me was made with a softer action which I love.
Alas, I do not.... but doesn't prevent one from looking and Jones.
DeleteVery true....
DeleteWho's a lucky boy :) congratulations Alan well deserved.

Theresa in more ways than one.
Alan,
ReplyDeleteThe rod, line, leader, and dressing are wonderful. What a nice gift indeed and we can think of no one more deserving of such a beautiful gift as you my friend! I just had a silly notion run thru my noggin.....will this new rod and line replace the current rod that you dearly love? I think I already know the answer! It's not a matter of replacement but of addition to! I guess we all do the same thing! Now you have another option and what a grand option this one looks to be! You are blessed! Keep the pictures and reports coming on this one and all the weapons in your arsenal! This is so neat!

Doug what a lovey dilemma to be faced with. I love the both of them equally. They look similar but they act differently.
Wow, what a generous gift! That little rod is a gem, just like the brookies you pursue. Seems like a perfect match.

Mike generous indeed. And it loves the tight quarters which is what I like.
Alan, After your post I was poking around his site.....there is a 7'6" 5wt in honey ordered. Dang'it man, what have you done!! LOL
ReplyDeleteRalph Long

Ralph your going to love it.
I think so, the samples have a great look to them. And his turn-around is very nice. I'm glad I got my foot in the door before he's so busy that it becomes a 6mos wait. :)
DeleteI agree his turn around time is a big plus.
DeleteRalph he also makes some pretty tying tools...I'll be ordering a few.
I did notice that as well. :)
DeleteAlan, the rod is stunning and glass! Now, I've got to check out Mike's site, which makes me very afraid for my budget. Well deserved Alan as you are a fine representative of the good of the fly fishing community.

Howard I had to move some stock before I bought a new rod...glad I did.
Thanks for the lead Alan! I am in conversation with Mike about building a bamboo rod out of some old blanks I bought a couple years back.

Bill I hope you can work it out with Mike.
I'd love to see the finished piece.
Very nice !! I love all my glass fly rods . Are you going to do a write up on the Cape Cod brookies . Years past I fished for them in a few little creeks . Good fishing

Yes I am. We were there this past week. Beautiful streams there, and some awesome brook trout.
Just a small request...could you use a name, first or middle, or perhaps some initials, makes it more friendly. Thanks
Yes . I am old but new to all this computer thing and did not know how . Will see if this works .
DeleteRing, now that's better. Computers is not my "A" game either but I give it a go.
