Good morning. Over the last few weeks I've purchased several new colors of Pearsall's Silk threads. These threads have been around for a while but they are new to me. So I kind of put the various colors along with several different hackles to create some fish catchers. The silk thread body is very much an eye catcher, especially when wet. When you add a whisp of dubbing either for the body or thorax you also add that subtle translucent movement that will at times be a key factor in getting fish to strike. Below are a few flies tied with the new thread.
The silk thread colors are, Chestnut, Salmonberry, Olive and Claret.
"Chestnut and Starling"...chestnut silk thread body, very sparse squirrel dubbing, and bleached starling hackle.
"Salmonberry and Partridge"...body salmonberry silk thread, sparse squirrel dubbed thorax and partridge hackle.
"Salmonberry and Starling"....body salmonberry silk thread, and black starling hackle.
"Salmonberry and Light Starling"....body salmonberry silk thread, starling undercovert hackle.
"Olive and Partridge"...body olive silk, sparse olive squirrel dubbed thorax, partridge hackle.
Olive and Partridge"...body olive silk thread, thickly dubbed black squirrel thorax, partridge hackle.
"Olive and Starling"...body olive silk thread, thickly dubbed black squirrel thorax, starling hackle.
The last two flies are good representations of caddis larva.
Gorgeous flies Alan. I've not used silk a ton, just a few years... and it really has some fantastic qualities. Worth the investment!

Will I agree. When wet nothing can compare with silk.
Can't wait to get those flies you sent me in the water. Even though the season opens the end of this month, It'll be a while, feet of snow still on the ground.

Mark I'm sure they will do you fine. Lots of snow now equals lots of water later.
Beautiful works of art as usual Alan! I know those flies will work wonders on the brookies!

Pete I'm hoping they will do just that...and maybe some browns, bows and maybe a bass or two.
Spiders are always ready to catch fish. nice job Alan. Haven't pulled out the Pearsalls for some time. My have to. :)

Ralph those late spring-early summer evenings are when spiders come out to play.
Pearsall's Gossamer and spiders go back a long, long time. Your versions are lovely, Alan. You'll also like what you can do if you get some 6a (light orange)and the variegated Jasper can produce interesting effects.

Mel you are so kind.
Beautiful flies, I see those catching many fish. In your opinion Alan, do you feel the silk works better than regular tying thread? I have tied some of each for the upcoming season and plan to see which works best. I may have to invest in some more Pearsall's. Thanks for sharing.

Chris yes I do think silk will give your flies an edge over regular threads. I think a few basic colors will do you well.
very nice ties indeed Alan, any Yorkshire would be proud to fish them here on the rivers up the Dales...including me .

George that makes me feel real good, knowing a gent from the heart of "north country spiders" approves of my work.
There is no finer thread than silk for tying flies. Modern polymers don't even come close, in my view. I encourage all tyers to try silk, at least once. And of course, Piersall's is tops.

John very well said. A few extra cents now can pay dividends on the stream.
Alan, if I keep hanging around here I'm going to either have you adopt me or at least put me on an allowance so I can keep up with you. I'm off to find some silk thread!

Alan,
ReplyDeleteYou have struck at the core of soft-hackle beauty and versatility! And, you have done it, as always, quite well! Your patterns are exquisite! Please tie a bunch more!

Doug I appreciate your kind words. You gents that tie these flies know how elegant and simplistic they are. And the main attribute is they are "killers".
They look pretty "fishy" Alan..Nice job..
