I had a few hours around mid-day and chose to fish a stream close by. It took a half hour to get there and a minute later I was geared up and making my first cast. There is a little undercut with a nice tree above that I like to make my first cast, the reason it generally holds a fish or two and it did not change any from previous times.
A few casts and I was into my first brookie of the day.
He was a spirited jewel and he moved around that little stream like a fast train. He actually plowed through a leaf jam in his quest to shake the hook.
A new fly that was tried for the first time by me. The pattern has been around for years. I noticed it in a book of "North Country Flies" more on it later.
The prettiest brook trout of the day. She took a liking to that sexy color blue and said I must have it.
A Lady Slipper. It will probably bloom on Mother's Day.
What better way to celebrate such a grand day.
Beautiful stream, gorgeous brook trout and the dessert photo looks just delish!!! I could go for a piece of that pie and ice cream!

Pete it was a good way to celebrate the outing. I'll save you a piece.
Alan, it is nice to have a quality brook trout stream so close by to where you live and I'm glad you caught a few of the beauties in there. That piece of pie looks great. I will have mine with a cup of good black coffee.

Sam I very thankful for such places so close. Black coffee is just what I had with the pie.
I saved you a piece as well.
Something about those basalt and brownstone cobble streams and their surroundings gets me interested. I don't get to fish streams in that kind of bedrock often, but when I do I find they have so pretty unique structure.

Rowan there are some sections of this stream that the water flows strictly over bedrock. And there are times when you'll find trout there.

ReplyDeleteHow I wish my closet place to fish was 30 minutes away here in Spring Hill. 45 minutes will get me on the water; colorful brook trout. What tippet size were you using? thanks for sharing

Bill 45 minutes is not to bad. Bill I use a 6x tippet.
This is a wonderful time of year. Glad to see you are taking advantage of the breaks in the weather!

Mark it looks like we're in for some heavy rain over the next day or so, and then a warm up. That should bring out the hatches.
Nice to get out and even better on a small stream close to home, well done Alan.

Such a great feeling being on a stream. It seems to fill your glass with hope.
