Yesterday Rowan and I got together to fish a couple of small streams. Again I must tell you that the both of us were in an euphoric state upon seeing just how beautiful the waters were, and then when the flies hit the water the euphoria grew. Skies as blue as they come, water so very cold, a breeze entered from time to time and that managed to keep the mini-flyers at bay. Spring in the woods of Connecticut and it does not get much better.
The brookies were incredible...fat and healthy. Rowan had one strip line from his reel, he ran upstream and downstream, so very tenacious.
Rowan with a fall brookie, "what" he actually was in spawning color.
The brookies were taken on a variety of flies but the "Bomber" was the best.
There were trout in almost every pool.

One of my better brookies taken that day.
Good Evening Alan,
ReplyDeleteIt was good to be part of your euphoria over this absolutely perfect fishing day with your pal Rowan! It is nice to pictures against the names! Rowan, it's nice to meet you!
The brook trout are incredible and do indeed seem fat and fine! Fishing in our area is incredible too and I have been trying to dedicate some evenings in the service of our locals. They have responded well just as we see these brookies have also!
Excellent, excellent post Alan! Thanks for sharing your excitement....excuse me euphoria!

Doug Rowan is a fishing machine. It's good to see youth getting so involved with fly fishing.
Each time I venture out my eyes can't believe how well these streams and trout survived. Doug "fish" buddy.
Looks like a beautiful outing Alan. The weather here in Maine has been odd, lots of rain lately which has made it hard to get out due to high waters. I may have to go find myself a small stream near home to try along with some of those bombers you speak about often. Enjoy your weeekend. Thanks for sharing.

Chris we have had ample rain as of late, the small streams recover quickly from high water which make them fishable sooner. I'm still waiting to fish the Farmington, but I'll wait until the flow is to my liking. The bomber a fly for most everything that swims.
Lovely!

Will that it was. Nature heals and rebuilds.
That fist fish really shows how healthy that stream is: small fins on a fat brookie. He's growing so fast his fins can't keep up!

Rowan that's a good point. And a healthy says a great deal.
Aaah, such beautiful country.

Mark we are all thrilled by the way both stream and trout have come back after several bad years.
Great Post!

Bob I appreciate the comment.
Impressive brook trout in that stream, Alan. There must be some good food supply in it by the looks of their girth and the one that stripped line that Rowan connected with. It looks to be flowing beautifully. Plenty of rain again today too.

Sam one of those streams has given up a few biggies, but after last summer and fall we never expected to find so many healthy trout.
A great deal of rain today, and a showery week ahead.
Sam I'll be up in MA next week. I have an invite to fish some special brook trout waters. More later.
DeleteAlan I look forward to hearing how you find the fishing in my neck of the woods. There definitely is some good brook trout fishing to be had in Western Mass. Good Luck!
DeleteIs it any wonder why Spring is the season of rebirth? It's so nice to see blue skies, clear cold water, green trees and fat healthy fish. Thanks Alan!

Armando I see you have visited is blog. He is an asset to fly fishing for sure.
Glad to hear there's been plenty of rain down East. I'll be going up soon for landlocks. always do better when the streams are running full. A. bomber is an awesome pattern. Lately I've been fishing a small caddis (cream cdc wrapped body with elk wing). Lot quicker to tie and outrageously effective.

John those landlocks love that swift water. That caddis sounds interesting. We used small caddis for landlocks when fishing upperdam...they loved them.
wow..one of those really special days..not that they all aren't special..
