I spent some time yesterday at Franklin Land Trust conserved property, "Crowningshield". My day began with some spectacular views of the countryside, even though the sun did not break onto the the trees it still made for some beautiful post card scenes. I walked down to the stream and observed how much work has been done here since Josh Morse and myself first fished here two years ago, I think I still have a bruise or two on my backside from the walk. The air was crisp and the clouds at times won out but my time here was all that I could have wanted. This little bit of land along with the stream it protects will remain as you see it. So many have worked so hard to achieve this so we all can benefit from it's beauty. My thanks to Franklin Land Trust, Massachusetts Division of Fish and Game, Trout Unlimited and Fields Pond Foundation for their work. I would like you to check out F.L.T. site and tell them what they have created and how much it's appreciated. http://www.franklinlandtrust.org/ or https://www.facebook.com/fltrust
My view yesterday morning. What a way to start the day.
I can remember the first time on this run, it's pretty much the same.
There is work being done to create habitat. This is a prime example.
What a place to stop and enjoy a cup of coffee. I would have done so if I had not left the thermos in the car.
Another example of stream enhancement. Chop and Drop. Trees are cut and allowed to fall into the stream to create cover for the brook trout.
And of course the reason for it all. Wild brook trout.

ReplyDeleteAwesome post. What a pretty stream and of course the brook trout are beautiful. It is a good thing that the land trust has protected that stream and surrounding land.

Pete I know you would love fishing that stream.
The FLT does some wonderful work in protecting valuable lands.
Alan, what a place! Awesome to see such a spot be protected for the future!

Will I love that place, wish it were closer to home.
It would be a great place for you and the family to take a hike.

ReplyDeleteWhat a worthy organization; helping make the future of trout fishing in your state productive for the younger generation. Loved the image of the coffee break stream---thanks for sharing

Bill many people doing good for all of us.
That place on the stream held me for some time, simply beautiful.
My gosh, Alan, what a beautiful place and stream. A slice of heaven on earth. I am pleased to see good flow on that stream despite the lack of rain of late. I am glad we are getting some today and tonight!

Sam if you want to forget the world for awhile just walk this area. My goodness such beauty, solitude, it's so lifting.
The stream was in great shape for this time of year, the added rain will no doubt get the brookies moving.
Alan, I know of a tiny little flow that feeds into a larger stream within a suburban park that the brookies go up into every fall. How they survive the warm temperatures in the larger stream is beyond me, but there they are every fall. Just amazing.
ReplyDeleteSam that larger stream probably has an underground source of cold water in places. The trout will hold there until they feel comfortable moving. I know of a couple of streams like that. Survivors.
DeleteA shining example of good conservation.

Rowan they accomplished a great deal "together".
This area is a real gem. Everyone should support keeping beautiful wild places that way.

Howard you would love it. Good things happen when we work together for a wonderful cause. Thanks FLT, TU, Mass F&W
Lovely water, Alan.I blew up the fifth photo and gazed at it for some time. Almost lost myself in its beauty and peace. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteWhat condition was the river in before the Franklin Land Trust did this magnificent work?
Thanks again for letting us tag along with you.
Kind Regards,
Steve.

Steve that poll seemed to put me in a trance as I gazed upon it that morning, the peace and quiet was beyond words.
The stream itself was in decent shape. What they did was clean an area to the bottom of the mountain to allow a much easier access to the stream. They also cut trees as shown to enhance trout habitat.
It's a beautiful but tough area in which to work.
Steve, the main achievement was the fact that the FLT has made it so that Crowningshield will remain as we see it today.
