A Jewel

We have had some beautiful days this past week and I was fortunate enough to take advantage of a couple. As you can see the woodlands are full of spring color. Flowers are all over and the fragrances are heavenly. I have talked about the concept of trout flies and flowers and how when you match the color of the blooms to the color of the fly magic will happen.

The stream was clear. Large pockets of deep water held the promise of good fishing.

And that promise was true. Beautiful little brookies came up from their rocky bottom to take the fly.

Again and again the small white wet fly did he trick.

Bright sun, a shadow or two and the fly swings near...

and suddenly a brook trout takes.

This day it was all about this little white wet fly. The fly is the Genesee Jewel...it was created by the late Mark Libertone.

"Trout Flies and Flowers"....thanks Mark.

  1. Very nice tribute to Mark Libertone, Alan. I use the Genesee Jewel up here as well; it's a great brookie fly.

Mark created many great ones. This fly does stimulate the brookie. I may have to visit a few brown trout haunts and see how they react.

  5. Beautiful photos during a wonderful time of year, Alan. Is there a correlation between the white flowers being out and the brook trout taking the white fly? Some more rain coming this week which will do your streams good. Regards, Sam

Sam there's nothing scientific about the color of flowers and the color of the fly used. But there is evidence of certain fly hatches that take place when certain types of plants and flowers bloom. I had an interesting day recently when I fished a muddler minnow and the trout were all over it. Now what flower has the color of a muddler? As far as rain we could use a refresher.

Those flowers resembles the dogwood bloom. A great way to display the streamer you was using. Was you using your bamboo rod on this trip? Thanks for sharing

Bill I think they are blackberry flowers. Actually the fly is a wet fly, it represents a light colored mayfly.
The bamboo rod was in operation that day.
