It was last summer when I had the pleasure of meeting the lil' angler. She was on the bank of a stream with her dad close by. In her hand was a small fishing rod which turned out to be a Tiny Ten tenkara rod. Dad had tied on a fly and she showed this veteran fly fisher how it was done. It was in this meeting where she convinced me to try tenkara. Besides being able to actually catch fish it also had a very exciting price. Her dad, who is Nate Camp filled me in on all the particulars of the rod to which I purchased one a week later. Since that meeting of last year Nate has filled me in on some of the lil' anglers ramblings. By the way her name is Natty.
With a smile like that any brookie would gladly take a fly presented.
She is accomplished. That is a trophy wild brown from that stream. It is a wonderful thing when children are introduced to fishing. Great job Nate and Natty.

I have a major milestone coming in a few weeks and it involves this blog. I have been doing this for over ten years now and I have to make a few decisions. More to come.
Go girl! Great to see.
ReplyDeleteNo doubt a future ambassador for the sport and the waterways.

ReplyDeleteI get more pleasure watching a small child land a fish than me landing a fish. What an accoplishment Natty has mastererd; I have a feeling she has found a hobby for the rest of life. She reminds me of my little Laelyn--thanks for sharing

Bill in her short time she has become quite good at it. And the enjoyment for her dad and others is greater to see. I hope she continues.
Wow, and she doesn't even need waders. Gotta love the sunglasses. Perfect for a little princess.

Mark that stream is perfect for her. Not to rough and brush covered. Wet wading is welcomed. The sunglasses are fitting.
Brk trt, I'm smiling from ear to ear looking at and reading this particular post. I cannot find the words to describe that precious moment, other then "what a precious moment"

Phil your words are spot on. As parents we see such moments but they pass as fast as our kids grow.
Fantastic! It's great to see such a happy fishing kid. I also can't help but think that if I were that height, I wouldn't have to spend so much effort on crouching and crawling to sneak up on the fish.

Shawn happy she is. Most kids want to catch a fish with every cast, but she's content to deal with those unpredictable trout.
Well done, Nate! Your daughter is a wonderful ambassador for our sport, as are you. Thank you for taking the time to introduce her to fly fishing in a way that she could enjoy. We desperately need more Nate's and Natty's. Post of the year, Alan.

Mike so true. I don't think I can add anything to what you just said.
Alan,
ReplyDeleteWhat a sweetheart you have "discovered" on your adventures! My thoughts are what everyone else above has said above! And, they said it well!
Natty is quite good at what she does! The interesting thing will be to watch how she responds and develops in the future! She seems to have a firm grasp on the basics and a great love for the sport already! Way to go Nate! You are doing well!

Doug I generally don't meet accomplished anglers that have inspired me more then Natty did.
Doug I spent some hours at the local pond with the bluegills. They love soft hackles...
Alan,
DeleteShe indeed seems special and so young! Wow! I hope you kept Daddy's phone number and address so you can keep tabs on this young upstart!
I am so glad to hear that you spend time with the local 'gills! My friends down below in our small farm pond are great sounding boards for soft-hackles, flymphs, nymphs, and all sorts of patterns! They are generally very accepting of what ever comes over them! I like this about them! I think I could love brookies and browns too in the environments they thrive in!
Doug, those gills are a lot of fun on the fly. They don't care if the fly is tied true to pattern, if it looks like a bug they will "whack" it. Unpretentious.
DeleteI absolutely love seeing these photos! Good chance that young lady will be flyfishing for her whole life. I hope so.

Sam with dad's help and positive reinforcement I think you may be right.
Alan: the memories and experiences you are giving these children are priceless. Thank you for sharing these precious moments.
ReplyDeleteNow you have me worried about the “major milestone” and this blog. Let is know what you are thinking. . . Is it too much work, etc. Your blog is important. I am sure there are lots of viewers who do not comment. Have a great Memorial Day weekend, much needed rain coming to PA. Best, Kevin

KKevin it's important that they get the support from us older folks at their young age. Her dad Nate does a great job at that.
Worry not. The milestone is one I never would have thought possible when I typed the first post. More on that later.
Have a wonderful weekend.
