Freestone Streams

I am fortunate to have many small freestone streams close to home. These streams hold good populations of wild trout. These are two of them that I fished over the last few days. The streams produced many trout, and oh so many rises. Caddis, and Wulff flies were all that were needed. The waters remain cool, with the shade of the tree canopy.

  2. Hi BT, I always enjoy your posts. I'm curious - for the small streams you normally fish, what rod do you use? There are a number of very lightweight and shorter fly rods bouncing around (Orvis Trout Bum, Cabelas TQR - Tight Quarters, and probably a trillion others). I'm wondering if there is something you have had particular success with, how long it is, and so on. I'd like to stay economical. I know that the rod is of less importance than the angler, of course, but sometimes I enjoy checking out the gear. Looks like you're having a great spring; keep on enjoying yourself. - RSL

  3. Richard, welcome

I'll try to give you some info on my preferences in small stream fly rods.

Any rod between 6 and 7 ft is adequate for small streams. If you have the ability to make a cast, in a more open stream a 7ft rod will do. And naturally if its a tightly brushed stream the shorter 6 ft rod will be better.

    I fish Orvis Surerfines in a 7ft 5wt and a 6 ft 3 wt. I have a Sage Fli 7ft 3wt that I use often.

And my favorite is a St. Croix Avid 6ft 3wt.

The Orvis rods are pricey, but sometimes they can be found on Ebay, much more reasonable.

The Avid is a good deal, about 200.00 with a lifetime waranty. They also make a rod the Imperial, for about 150.00. Percys Flies in New Hampshire has good deals on St. Croix rods, they even give you 10 dozen flies with the purchase. percysflies.com

    Hope this helps.

  4. Beautiful streams Brk Trt. Looks like some good pocket water.

I agree with what you said about small stream rods. Any of the Orvis 7' 5 weights are really sweet. Don't think a better all around small stream rod can be found.
