"The Farmington"

Farmington River Brown Trout

Connecticut's Farmington River

The weather over the last few weeks has been dry, and my beloved small streams, although cool are in need of some rain. Rather that stressing those little guys I decieded to fish the West Branch of the Farmington. Its a tailwater fishery with good flows and cool water. It produces insects like a factory, and has some fine trout, many of natural production. I'm not a hatch matching fly fisher, but instead fishing patterns that have worked well for me in the past. Flies such as Bombers, BH PT's, and a few streamers.

If ever in the area the Farmington is a fine river to fish. Upcountry Fly Shop is a good stop before hitting the river, they will provide you up to date info to make your time more rewarding, along with a well stocked fly shop.

  1. That is a great looking river. Does it hold brookies?

  2. Terry,

Yes it does, although not as plentiful as browns and rainbows.

On a given outing you might hookup with a brookie, but the browns wil dominate.

  3. Nice Job B.T.!
I fished a coldwater tailwater Class 1 on Monday evening and was rewarded with a 17" wild brown. He would have been right at home on the Farmy. A little out of place on this small river. He was "King Of The Pool" without a doubt. Need to get you down here to fish it with me. Stay cool my friend.

  4. Great report BT! Healthy looking brown!

Down here in western NC, we're in need of some rain too! Rivers and streams are getting low. I think we need to try a new rain dance or something...

  5. AT,

    Well done.

A brown of that size on a small stream is a true trophy fish.

  6. Tyler,

Your right we do need a rain dance.

Our long range forecasts don't look promising.

  7. Looks like a nice river! I've heard about the Farmington, but haven't had the occasion to fish it.
