Autumn Thoughts

Autumn has always been a special time of year for me. With the day's becoming shorter, the crisp days and cool nights, where hot coffee seems to have a better taste. There are the days when a flannel shirt feels oh so good. The streams and the woods are changing, colors are brilliant, the water becomes so clear, as if its trying to show the trout where to spawn. The trout take on their fall colors and are as beautiful as the countryside. The brook trout will take a bright streamer, which is one of my favorite ways to fish in the fall. The calandar still says summer, but my thoughts are of autumn.

Wild brook trout, in their fall colors rival the beauty of the countryside

  1. Was in Boston today for business, and although it was dark and rainy, enjoyed the temps in the low 60s. All I could think of was how I couldn't wait for the brisk fall air...then I got home and read your post. Now the wait is unbearable.

  2. It is still August, but fall is right around the corner. The cool temps we have enjoyed this week are just a taste of what is to come. Fall will be here before we know it.

After the hot summer just experienced in the east, I think the refreshment about to come is something we all will enjoy.

  5. dave,
Thats one great outing. The Farmington is a truly fine fishery. We are fortunate to have it.

Have you ever fished a yellow muddler?

  6. Brk Trt, although the cooler nights have been great for sleeping with the windows open I do not think I am ready for fall. The end of Sept is the end of the trout season for me. Then it is time to get out the eight weight and target salmon. Fun, yes, but still not ready.

  8. dave,
The reason I made referance to the yellow muddler, is in regard to your telling me you had taken a 12 in brookie on a muddler. A muddler tied with a yellow wing of either hackle or marabou is a brookie magnet.

As far as fishing the Farmy at night,I'm not quite sure on the regs. There is a lot of MDC property along it that closes at dusk.

  11. dave,
I can't say much about mice on the Farmy, but in July while fishing a small Class 1 wild trout stream I cought a glimpse of a live mouse who jumped into the stream from a large root bank. No sooner had he taken a few strokes when a fish I guess grabbed hold of him. The tussel lasted a short time and the mouse made it to shore. In this stream the largest trout I've taken was perhaps 12 inches.

    Maybe its worth a try.

  13. dave,

You might give Upcountry a call to see if he stocks these patterns. A large muddler minnow, might work also.
