Some Favorites

The Orvis Battenkill, English made. For the money it's the best fly reel out there.
I have owned one of these for years and they have never failed me. They also have a very classic look.

We as humans have always had favorites. These may be autos, sports teams, pets, beers, etc.
These are a few of mine, mostly associated with fly fishing.

Gink, this has been a staple in my vest/pack for years. I used a floatant when I started fly fishing made by Garcia, a silicone in a glass bottle. I ran out of the stuff while fishing the Housy many years ago. I stopped in the old fly shop on the river and the gent there sold me Gink. I used it that day, and every time I need floatant to this day.

Tying threads. Danville's flymaster waxed thread is the only thread I use on most of the flies I tie. It's been in use for many years.
Gudebrod, hot orange is a thread that I use on my flies with the Ausable name. Bombers, Wulffs, and emergers are all tied with this thread.

This is a pattern I started tying a few months ago.... An emerger/dry.
This fly is strating to become a favorite in a fast way. Reason, it works.

This is the best fly box you can own. It's a great box for dries, wets , nymphs.
The flies are held steady, with no hackle crush, and when it's opened in the wind the flies stay put. At about 15.00 dollars, its a good value.

Ramen Noodles, a favorite. Sometimes when you arrive home from a late night on the stream it makes for a good hot quick supper. A snack while listening to a ballgame.
A tasty break from tying flies. Add some shrimp, or leftover chicken, it's not to bad.

  3. Todd,
    Thanks.
Unfortunately Orvis no longer offers the Battenkill, English made reel. Gudebrod hot orange is the best.

    Ed,
I have a few of those planned for another post

  4. Sounds good Alan.

When I was a kid I worked in a kitchen and I loved getting in early because I would "borrow" a few treats from the baker's bench. If your wife is missing pastries, then have her check the dishwasher's area. :)

Have you ever been to Modern Pastry in the North End section of Boston? Good stuff.

  5. I sold my Orvis English Battenkill to raise funds for my Browning Buckmark pistol. I don't regret selling it, but it was a great reel. I love the addition to the Ramen!

  6. Wonderful. I have the same Battenkill and can't say a bad word about it. Many of your other choices are top notch as well. Love to see posts like this one.

  7. Great post. One of the weirdest telephone (or otherwise) conversations I've ever had was with the owner of the company that makes Gink. what a hoot. Certainly agree about the Battenkill, and will have to look for the Gudebrod thread, since the company's out of business, sad to say.

  8. Ed,
That's why they make a "bakers dozen".
I've never been to the Modern Pastry in Boston. But I've been to the Modern Pastry in Hartford. Super quality treats.

    Savage,
    Thanks.
I can't blame you for that. A Browning is a fine fine firearm.

  9. Bruce,
    Thanks.
I enjoy posting about the everyday stuff we use, and perhaps never give them much thought.

    Gary,
    Thanks.
There's a story not many fly fishers can speak of.
I've been trying to locate that Gudebrod thread also. It shows up on Ebay once and awhile, but it's the wrong colors. Orvis threads are as close to Gudebrod as I've found.

  11. I also had an Orvis Battenkill for 5/6 lines before I changed my main rod to 4 weight. I bought the reel because it wasn't expensive at all. It now sits in an drawer of my tying desk with a lot of good memories.

  12. Trout Magee,
That little fly is fast becoming a #1.
    Thanks.

    Satoshi,
    Thanks.
You've got to love those memories associated with fishing items.

Most of my Battenkill reels are 5/6, but a few spools I have 4 wt lines. They seem to work OK, and do not unbalance the rod.

  13. I second those Cliff Boxes. My GF got me one about 4 months ago and it is by far my favorite fly box! Very tough and durable.

The Cliff boxes are truly no frills but very practical.
