Hackle, Book, and "Royal Mic"

Hackle......
Those that tie flies know that in the last few months they have become a premium item. In some places, especially internet shops they have all been impossible to purchase. The reason for this is they are being used in hair fashion.
Lets hope this trend dies rapidly, or your next fly purchase may be as costly as a cup of specialty coffee.

This is a book that I would place very high on a list of, "just plain good books".
There are several writers who tell of their experiences with wild trout. It's a very enjoyable read.

This bucktail streamer...."Royal Mic", is a creation of mine. It incorporates several of the same materials used in the Royal Coachman, and Mickey Finn streamers.

  1. Brk Trt,

As usual, wonderful post. In the past & present, excellent topics you've had. I usually can't wait to see/read your newest, and its such a surprise how captivating they are.

  2. Brk Trt,

Very nice post. With the current market for capes, you could probably pay off a mortgage with the ones shown.

Love the Royal Mic. I have to try tying some of these.

    Thanks for sharing!

    Nice post & Nice Tie!

This fad with the hackle feathers needs to end soon. Because of all the calls I was getting from Non-Tiers looking to buy my hackles, I've had to stop answering my phone and I even changed the message. By doing this I have probably missed calls from new customers! :(

  4. I might have to check out the book and the streamer looks great! As for the hackle fad, for as much as I tie now I'm pretty well set for awhile. Hopefully it's about over when I need to replenish.

  5. DRYFLYGUY,
    Thanks.
I try to post what I believe are topics that blend in with fly fishing and small streams, with some good eats.

  6. River Hunter Flies,
    Thanks.
It must have been tough to screen out the non tyers.

    Bill,
    Thanks.
They claim that production has increased to meet this new demand. If the fashion suddenly dies, it could mean cheaper prices for us.

  8. What's the difference between a bucktail and a regular streamer?

  9. Sanders,
    Thanks.
I saw a TV report on the hair extensions using hackle. The hair dressers were charging 15 dollars a feather.

    penbayman,
    Thanks.
I think tying a bucktail can be more difficult than a feather wing. Bucktail can be so unruly at times.
