First Snow in Brook Trout Forest

Thursday, October 27th the day started off with rain, and it became heavy at times. As the day went on it became colder and the rain turned to snow. It looked very pretty as it coated the trees and grass. This was only a dusting but it was the first snows in brook trout forest.

Friday found me walking into the woods with the sound of crunching snow underfoot.
The stream looked like sparkling diamonds in the sunlight as it rushed over the rocks
and logs along its banks.
I had already decided that I was going to fish dry flies, why not it was perfect timing, first snow there has to be a hatch coming. No but I enjoy fishing dries and brook trout are usually willing to eat most anything that could be a meal.
As the flies drifted through the streams little seams and pools there were rises and a few chases, and on few of them I was rewarded with a trout to hand.

It was a fine day.

As I stood along this stream I observed at the tail of this pool two brook trout in the process of renewing life. I stayed for a spell and watched. Then moved on without them knowing.

The flies that were selected for this outing.

Wild brook trout. I can never describe my feelings as I admire them. There seems to be a new one though every time I do.

  4. DRYFLYGUY,
    Thanks.
    It's appreciated.

    cyclefish,
    Thanks.
They are truly beautiful fish. There should be a good crop of brookies. Spawning conditions were great.

    Johnny Utah,
    Thanks.
That tree was awesome. Perhaps if I fished more instead of looking at the beauty around, I'd catch more fish. Have a good outing.

  11. Hey BT. We, too, got our first dusting last night and I can only imagine what it's like up the hill. Just might make Brook Trout fishing a little better.

  14. I agree with you 100%. It is difficult to put into words what beautiful creatures they are. Most of the time I don't even try because my words would pale in comparison.

  15. Brook trout in the snow in October....Who would have thunk it. Thank goodness we weren't down in the gap for this storm. I hear lots of road closures in the park right now. Going to make Muzzle Loader on the Jersey side interesting. Good luck on your PA trip.

  16. Great brook trout and I love the write up. Also those are bombers in the fly box give away. The AZWonderings mini hopper and your bomber are two patterns I fished this year with great success thats why they are both going to be in there. So thanks for the write up, and also for the new patterns!
