"A View From Coal Creek"

There are a lot of fine outdoor writers in this world. Enough books published that one could not even read in two life times. And for all that ink and photo images there are but perhaps a hundred of these books that I would consider to be the best. "The View From Coal Creek" is one of the top books, and it is very near the top of that list. The author is Erin Block, and some may recognize her as the writer of an excellent blog "Mysteries Internal".

Well this is my take on her first book. I have read it and found it an easy to read, informative, and entertaining book. It tells of fly fishing, life, and an achievement of creating a living piece of art called a 'bamboo fly rod". My favorite chapter is "Days Like Molasses". It's a half dozen pages that say so much. Do something wonderful for yourself and pick up a copy of her book.

I have tried to capture my feelings for this place"Coal Creek" and have created this streamer which I think does just that.

  1. Great fly, I have the book but haven't sat down and read it yet. Whenever I read Erin's stuff it consumes me so much I have to almost prepare myself for it. I get caught up in her writing and lose track of time and what I'm doing. The only other thing that does to me is watching football.

    1. Kevin Frank,
      Thanks.
I believe most people who read her blog and now the book feel the same.

  2. Coal Creek is just a hop, skip and jump from my house which means Erin is a neighbor. Two of the top 5reasons to live in Boulder County, Colorado. Your streamer speaks to me as does Erin's writing. Good job Alan.

      Thanks.
Then the next time you fish the stream, toss a fly for a few drifts for me.

  4. I'm so very glad you enjoyed the book, Alan. And the streamer captures my imagination -- here in a canyon, daylight is fleeting -- late up and early put to sleep. But this time of day, late-afternoon, when the last rays of sunlight stream over Twin Spruce peak...yellow, gold, and warm. Beautiful. Thank you.

The thanks must go to you for giving us such sight into what fly angling and life is.
Now how do I get the book signed?

  8. Having recently discovered Erin's blog, I have become an avid reader. She is a wordsmith of uncommon ability, and her introspective observations are candid and moving. I wish I had her ability to write.

  9. Alan, somehow, someway, Erin and you need to work out a package deal where she sells the book and you tie "Coal Creek" streamer as a package deal. Both incredible pieces of work!

  10. I'm working through the book now too. She is definitely a great writer. I honestly think the name "Block" will be kept in regard just the same as Grierach, etc. It has been fun to follow her these last couple years.

    Great fly as well.

    cheers.
