Exciting Times for Streamer Tyers

The community of fly tyers who love strapping feathers and silk as well as tinsel to long hooks are about to be gifted with a book by a fly tyer, and historian on the subject of "featherwing streamers".

Sharon E. Wright from Maine will release the book "tying Heritage Featherwing Streamers" in January 2015. Sharon is in good company, for Maine is known for women streamer tyers, Carrie Stevens, Selene Dumaine, and now Sharon Wright. The Winter issue of Fly Tyer magazine has a feature on the book as well as Sharon. I am looking forward to purchasing my copy of her book, and will do so at the "Fly Fishing Show" being held in Marlboro, Massachusetts in early January.

Below is a featherwing streamer I created and will be passed down to my children and grandchildren.

  2. If I was 30 years younger, I'd definitely start a collection. There are so many beautiful streamers out there.

  3. Looking forward to a copy - likewise, Ill purchase at the Marlboro show. I have enjoyed her Fly Tyer articles the last few years... as well as some of the stuff Don Bastian posted of her flies as well. As I recall, Sharon was there last year, but the crowd was to great to wait through. Happy Christmas BrkTrt!

I'll probably be in Marlboro on Friday, perhaps I'll see you.
Merry Christmas Will to you and family.

    2. If that's the case BrkTrt, I'd love to say hello. Marlboro is about 30' from me, so pending work, Friday would be the best day for me to get there (and hopefully smaller crowds). Regardless, have a super weekend!

    1. Mark,
      Thanks.
That's the Magalloway River in Maine. It's home to some spectacular brook trout and landlocked salmon.
      I love that place.

  5. I like you, am eagerly awaiting the release date of this book. Featherwing streamer's have always fascinated me since I was a child. I feel like a kid again waiting for this book, almost as excited as my first trip to the Rapid River and every subsequent trip to that region. Beautiful fly too by the way, you've inspired me to concoct one of my own.

  6. Richard Strolis,
    Thanks.
Rich I have been fishing the Rangeley region since the mid seventies but have never fished the Rapid, soon perhaps.
Featherwing streamers are sort of New Englands version of the salmon fly. Can't wait to see your streamer.
