Wild bounty

The other day Jeanette and I did a bit of wild harvesting. I located a large field of wild blackberries while fishing and we decided to take advantage of what nature offered. So armed with several containers we set off to fill them. Blackberry bushes are quite hazardous if one is not prepared. The thorns can really inflict some damage to your skin, so long sleeves and long pants are a must. The berries are also fragile and can't be packed in to tight, the weight of the fruit will cause them to crush and you have blackberry juice.

We collected two containers like this. They were placed on cookie sheets and placed in the freezer. A day later when completely frozen they were placed in freezer bags and put back in the freezer for future use. But..........

not until a few delights were made. Wild blackberry pancakes, with Connecticut maple syrup.

Mel for a small state we have a large black bear population. Fortunately they were not around, they were probably in one of the cities where foraging is easier and more tasty.

  6. One of the comments from the people that bought our house up the hill was "Ooh Blackberries. We have a recipe for a really easy Blackberry "cake", if you will, that goes really well with vanilla ice cream. Holler if you want it.

Who would have thought "blackberries" would be a selling point.
      That recipe send it along.

  7. A wonderful collection of berries. In these parts we call 'em black raspberries; our "blackberries" ripen in August. I've been picking some but can't get enough to build a plate of pancakes like that, unfortunately. Very tasty!

Walt I can remember picking some in early August when I was a kid. Now it seems they ripen several weeks earlier.
