The First Day Of Autumn 2015

Yesterday was the first day of Autumn. Up at 5 and soon out the door for a 3 hour drive north to spend this day with Jeanette walking the trails and woods of the lovely State of Vermont. We had absolutely splendid weather with sunny skies and cool dry temps. We both carried water but I think a cup of coffee would have been welcomed. Vermont like all of New England has been in a mild rain deficit. Things are dry, and the streams low and clear, but very cool a saving grace. Hopefully a rain storm or two will put things back into shape.

Some of the trails were steep, but well maintained and with a shade of caution were easily negotiated.

Some of you might recognize this river. The area was showing some early color, which we thought to be beautiful. What really stood out were the apple trees along many of our walking trails. These trees were loaded. Seems the lack of rainfall did not affect the crop.

One of the trees we stopped at to harvest some of the semi-sweet apples. A half day pack full came home and is destined for baking with a crumb topping.
Today on this second day of Autumn I spent on the Farmington.....that report next post.

  1. This is a great time to be walking the trails, to look at the streams and wait for the water to rise, to taste the fresh apples, the fruit of the year.

  2. Alan - the apple tree in our backyard is exploding this year as well. which is strange since it's never born much fruit in years past! Could it be the dry weather? So nice to see the mountains starting to take on some color, must have been a great day to hike!

Mark that's what we were thinking, but apples are full of water..go figure.
The colors are coming but they seem not as vibrant. Hiking was great, cool and bright with a bit of a breeze.

  3. Summer to Fall in California, no change. The folks across the street have a big apple tree in the front yard. The local deer do the cleanup of fallen apples.

Mark how can you stand not having a fall that's distinct from the other seasons. I thought Florida was the only state like that.
And do the deer love love them.

  4. Can't escape the apples this year... the tree up the hill is spitting out big juicy ones and the one off the front porch has the sweetest little apples I have ever eaten. I love this time of year!

Rowan, a banner year for sure, even the supermarkets are featuring apples at some super prices.
Fall is probably the season all could agree is the best.

    Thanks
Drew I'm not familiar with gum trees, but if you want apples and free of charge just drive down a woods road in the northeast and have at it.
