A Special Gift

About the middle of September I purchased a fiberglass fly rod from "Cane and Silk". A beautiful and functional fishing piece. Since receiving this rod it has been in my hand on every outing.

Last week I got an email from Mike at Cane and Silk and it said this... "Hello Alan I just want you to know you will be receiving a package within the next few days. Compliments of myself and my side rod business. This past year I started doing this twice a year for customers that I feel deserve this bonus. You are the winner for fall 2016 Please let me know if you have any questions once received. Best regards Mike"    Monday I received the package and this is what I found.

A 4'10" glass rod, for a 2/3 wt line. It is a translucent color "Ice" with rust colored wrappings. A wood reel seat along with engraved sliding band. Mike also included a silk fly line which is something I've read about but have never owned. The line is complete, ready to go on to the reel. Included is silk fly line dressing and a tapered leader. I did not put the silk line on choosing to wait until the Spring.

I have fished this rod twice now including a trip to Cape Cod fishing for "salters" and it has performed flawlessly.

Thanks Mike.

  1. Brook Trout, I spoke of your rod in fiberglass flyrodders- one of the most beautiful rods I have ever seen. The rod seems fitting for a person whose blog starts my day most every day. Thanks for this great writing and photos .

Kevin that white blank shows a sort of crispness that blends so well with the wood real seat and hardware.
      He does a great job.

Do you have one of these rods?
They are beautiful indeed. The last one Mike sent me was made with a softer action which I love.

  13. Alan,
The rod, line, leader, and dressing are wonderful. What a nice gift indeed and we can think of no one more deserving of such a beautiful gift as you my friend! I just had a silly notion run thru my noggin.....will this new rod and line replace the current rod that you dearly love? I think I already know the answer! It's not a matter of replacement but of addition to! I guess we all do the same thing! Now you have another option and what a grand option this one looks to be! You are blessed! Keep the pictures and reports coming on this one and all the weapons in your arsenal! This is so neat!

    2. I think so, the samples have a great look to them. And his turn-around is very nice. I'm glad I got my foot in the door before he's so busy that it becomes a 6mos wait. :)

    3. I agree his turn around time is a big plus.
Ralph he also makes some pretty tying tools...I'll be ordering a few.

Just a small request...could you use a name, first or middle, or perhaps some initials, makes it more friendly. Thanks
