"Bumblepuppy"

Good morning friends. This will be a simple post, short and sweet, and interesting to you I hope. On Wednesday April 11th I have the pleasure of tying flies at the Connecticut Fly Fishermans Association "Fly Tyers Round Table". The event is a great one both for fly tyers as well as fly fishermen and women. Lots of tyers creating patterns from salt water to farm pond bluegills. The event is free and open to the public. If you have the chance come see us. It's located at Veterans Memorial Clubhouse 100 Sunset Ridge, East Hartford CT.

I'll be tying the "Spruce" the original and a few variations.

In addition to the Spruce I'll also tie a couple of patterns that have worked well for me this past winter and into the spring.

Basic Black....

A pretty scene. This one is located on one of CT's class 1 wild trout streams. It also looks like a photo from the book Voelkers Pond. This leads to a project I'm tinkering with, and that is to tie all of the fly patterns from that book. Below is the first.

The "Royal Trude" the fly is featured in a couple of pages in the book.

Now "Bumblepuppy" Theodore Gordon's streamer fly....just need to get a couple of more materials. Coming soon.

Pete that Trude joins the other "Royals" as regal attractors...they catch a few for me over the year.

  5. Alan, I wish I could watch you tie. Your skills are so superior to what I can do...including cooking! How nice if someone could video while you are tying.

Howard fly tying and cooking, two of my many passions.
It would be awesome to have an event where I could feature both. "Tie and Fry".....

  6. Lovely morning there and that Royal Trude is great. You know I have a weakness for coachmen-style flies.

Does the calf hair help the visibility in low light? I've not fished one (yea, I know. Just don't recall ever owning one and certain I haven't tied it ...) and would be interested if this is a solid dusk-level searching pattern.

Spike, as stated before those Royal flies are elegant, and will get some attention at times.
The calf tail is quite visible on the water in low light conditions. I would not hesitate to use it as you have said.

  7. Alan, the more outrageous a pattern appears (relative to a real insect) the better it seems to fish. Look at the Atlantic salmon patterns. Your breakfast looks delicious. I love dippy eggs with Bush's baked beans enhanced with sauted bacon and onion with a dollop of Kosciusko's mustard added. I understand serving dipping eggs in NJ will get you arrested. I disdain all food that's overcooked.

  9. The Royal Trude has accounted for many good trout for me. I've not fished the Bumblepuppy, I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Rowan the Bumblepuppy is a streamer I've not fished either. It should be interesting to see if trout take to it. Gordon as well as Herman Christian tied variations of it.

  10. Alan, that breakfast is right up my alley. What a treat that would be for me. Those soft hackles and Royal Trude are beauties. I have been tying a few black soft hackles lately myself with hackles from a Hungarian partridge. The hackles aren't black like yours, but still look pretty good. Warm weather heading our way. Can you believe it?! Sox 8-1 coming into this first Yankee series of the year starting tomorrow night.

    Best, Sam

Sam I tie my black soft-hackles with starling and sometimes I'll use a black hen hackle.
The Sox are off to a great start. The Yankee series should be exciting.

My favorite part of this show would have been watching the masters tie up some of their favorite patterns. I put you at the top of the list!!! Thanks for sharing
