Conditions, Spiders And Some Comfort

Conditions yesterday were perfect, that is for hiking and not fishing. We have received a great deal of rain in the last few weeks and it has produced some rather full streams. I fished yesterday selecting a couple of streams I thought would handle the heavy rain that fell Friday night and Saturday. When I got there it was not what I had hoped for. Both streams were full to capacity. I fished the edges and soft seams and managed to hook a few, the tally was 0 for 7.

The last few glimpses of the "glorious season" along a small stream. What a beautiful day to be out.

Woodcock and Orange
I was gifted with some beautiful woodcock wings and feathers by a reader of SSR's. Lovely markings on the feathers and it will provide some fine flies and a great deal of enjoyment at the vise this winter. Here are a couple of spider patterns tied with woodcock.

Woodcock and Olive

Now for the comfort. Baked turkey vegetable soup. We have a day coming soon that features the turkey and this is one of the ways I enjoy it, the other is a turkey sandwich. This soup can be made in a quick version also. You can use canned chicken broth, browned ground turkey, and canned mixed vegetables. Add sliced cheese, I like mozzarella and baked until cheese browns and is bubbly.

  1. Good Morning Alan,
Another wonderful post indeed featuring the beautiful Connecticut woods and waters....and some delicious looking soup! You are truly blessed in so many ways!
The Pheasant and Orange you have posted below are gorgeous! I particularly like the subtle rib that you have applied to each! Just as your life as you have stated many times, sweet and simple! I find these character traits enduring and attractive!

Doug those beautiful fall colors are on their way out. Still some very good fishing to be had. I don't know if that rib will add to the likeability of the fly to the trout but I like it and now you do as well.
      Simplicity buddy.

  2. Woodcock is wonderful stuff, I wish we had more of them up here. I have a couple of whole skins from local birds and I love the colors. I like the soup, too, the baked cheese on top has all the same colors and markings as the Woodcock and Orange.

  3. Woodcock and anything is hard to beat, and orange is especially good in the fall of the year. Great looking spiders, Alan.

Bill your correct in your statement. Lately yellow silk bodies have been getting noticed in the streams I fish.

  4. They guys above talked about the flies. I want to know who gets to clean the pot? Being the dish washer in the family, I hope it was sprayed with Pam.

Mark, Jeanette does the crockery. These small bean pots for some reason don't present an issue when cleaning.

  5. Alan, Wonderful post! It's a little early for hibernating and tying flies, but not to early for turkey soup!

Kurt turkey soup is great on these cool fall days.
The hibernation may begin after New Years Day.

  6. Baked cheese atop soup, with enough added so it bubbles over and browns nicely at the edges of the bowl. Picked off the bowl and eaten with the fingers. A peasant's (like me)delight.

Scrotum diem (bag the day) Alan. Its an important one.

John don't you agree that food eaten with your fingers always taste best...I do.
      Mission accomplished today.
