A thin blue line

A thin blue line in eastern Connecticut. It flows at times gently and at times crashes through boulders creating some wonderful pockets and plunges. A day where the mountain laurel was showing and it gave the effect of snow. Within this woodland stream are some beautiful natives. They were playful this day and I was thankful. An old friend joined me on this outing and I appreciated his part in my success.

I love this spot

  1. Nice to see that trusty rod back in the action Alan... And to see so much water in that stream in Mid June!

Will me and that St. Croix rod have been together for a long time. We had some decent rains a few days ago and it's keeping the streams flowing nicely. And cold too 57 degrees.

  2. Looks like your version of the "Muddler" was the fly of the day. Another great day in the woods of Connecticut.

Mark previous experience with that fly, and brookies can be vulnerable to a big buggy looking fly. Good days buddy.

  3. Beautiful pics, Alan. The brookies in that stream are gorgeous. Is that an old Avid?

Mike that is an old Avid. A 6' 3wt that has probably caught more fish then any fly rod I own, with exception of my Orvis Superfine Small Stream Special, 7' 5wt.

    2. I love the Avid. I have an 9' 5wt. and a 7' 3wt. The 5wt. hasn't seen water in awhile but the 3wt. is a work horse.

    3. The Avid is one of St Croix's best rods. I purchased mine from LL Cote in Errol NH. I did a nice little post on it sometime back..I'll dig for it.

  5. Hi Alan,

Those are some impressive Brookies you have hooked there......... Also the stream looks so good.
Our rivers are blown out completely over here at the moment! After praying for some rain for so long we have had well over two months worth in the last 5 days leaving many waters carrying Environment Agency flood warnings (including my little river Leven). It will be some time before the rivers have cleared and are fishable again.

In the meantime keep those post coming.

Be careful what you wish for. But I'm sure you would prefer more water then less. Like most heavy rain events they will subside and all will be good. Most times the smaller streams recover quicker then the larger rivers.

  6. Hi Alan,
Although the Leven does drop quite quickly, we have a problem with silt clouding the water. A large portion of the river flows through arable land on the 'Cleveland Plain', so it can take quite a while for the water to clear enough to be fishable after a good downpour.
Never mind, the week will pass quite quickly at work, then I should have a good trip next weekend with some freshened up trout and grayling (at least that is the plan)!
