Franklin Land Trust's "Crowningshield"

Paid a visit to one of the northeast's most beautiful places. Crowningshield is as grand as it was the first time I fished it back in 2015. The West Branch of the North River that flows through the conserved area. It's waters hold wild brook trout and while I can't be certain I do believe there are salmon in there also. The area also has numerous small streams that are worth fishing and being in an area with changing weather the brook trout can be hot or really cold, and by that I mean fishing wise. The last few years have been generous and the brookies respond in numbers. These fish were sly but they could not resist a top water fly.

The Green Mountains. Looking north into Vermont. Down in the valley a river runs through it.

The West Branch of the North River.

An inhabitant of these parts.

One of the many small streams in the area. A dry fly dropped into a pool usually brings a response.

A series of pools followed by a set of riffles, all good for the brook trout.

These jewels are worth the effort.

The only fly used, it looks like poop, and may very well be the worst fly I have ever tied. More on it later.

  1. Apparently the Brookies disagree with your assessment of the fly.

Mike the more they chewed on that fly the better it produced. Brings to mind that old saying they pick on the weak and the helpless, that fly had both. FLT doing it's part to assure wild brook trout will continue swim the W.B. of the North River.

  6. A beautiful protected area with the brook trout finding refuge in a clear, cold stream. I hope it stays that way forever.
