Still at it......

Over the last week we have been visiting a few of our haunts both fishing and walking. The days have been warm and the skies sunny and clear for the most part. This time of year is so sweet to be outdoors. The change in scenery, the animal movements, and for some reason the Hummingbirds have been so visible this year. It seems they are everywhere. The streams depending on where you are can be low or normal. Some of them were quite nice in their flows and the brookies are active. A key factor in the small streams is that they all have been very cool.

You know how much I love fishing places like this. I can usually find one or two willing fish here.

As you can see dry flies are the bread and butter selection now.

The "never fail run"...and it lived up to it's name this day.

Lovely little creature. I never get tired of catching jewels like this.

"Mossy Pool" one of the most problematic places to drift a fly.

A small stream wild brook trout. The day's ahead are full of promise.

  1. Alan, the hummingbird population must definitely be at a peak. I have had to refill my feeder 2 to 3 times a week here in Madison. Lots of fun to watch and they seem to be taming up and will hover two feet in front of me, very often.

John they do seem more friendly toward us. It's crazy the amount of these birds that I have encountered. Many times I've tried to get photos of them but it never works. They say they are attracted to certain colors and I think one of those colors is orange.

  2. We had so many hummingbirds up this summer I had to put out multiple feeders to keep all the fighting to a minimum. They've all flown south from here at this point. Beautiful pics as always, Alan; thank you.

Trying to keep all those birds happy. Must be getting chilly up your way. One year while up in Rangeley in late September the thermometer read 33 degrees at 6AM....no black flies.

    2. We've had multiple frosts already with another one projected for tomorrow night. The tomatoes are all thankful they live in a greenhouse.

    3. Mike multiple frosts, that's amazing. I was once told that winter veggies are at there peak of flavor when they are first hit with a frost.

  4. Hi Alan
That early autumn countryside looks beautiful, and that first brookie is a real lump of a fish for those waters.
No hummingbirds on this side of the pond, but we have had bumper season for butterflies this year - particularly the 'Painted Lady' butterfly which been present in vast numbers across the UK.
After a successful trip up to Teesdale last weekend, I am hoping to get out on my own thin blue line this weekend with a trip to the little river Leven.
Keep the posts coming in the meantime!

Alistair he was well fed. I did not know that the hummingbird was only on our side of the Atlantic. You would enjoy their fleeting visits. It's good to see nature filling up the deficits.
      Good luck on your outing.

  5. Wonderful post,as usual, Alan. That smallest brookie was larger than my first trout for the season that I caught a few days ago. A wild brown trout, he/she was all of about three inches long and at first I thought I'd snagged a gum leaf. A plucky little creature.
    Kindest Regards,
    Steve.

Steve large trout are nice but small trout are the best. The colors they possess can't be found in bigger fish. As I have said several times those little guys have "concentrated" beauty. Have you ever noticed how tenacious they are when hooked.
      Small trout rule....

  6. Excellent Alan, simply and elegantly excellent! Every frame is haloed in green surroundings and crystal clear (and cool) waters! Then there is the trout.....Ah! Splendid!

Doug we are still green here but signs of fall are there. We could use some rain in the little blue lines. We are fortunate the temperatures have been cool.
I hope all is well at the "Den".

  8. You remind me of that day this spring when I inadvertently met you for the first time--out catching little jewels like that. I haven't been trout fishing since! Time to get back at it:-)

Yes I remember. It has been a great summer on the little streams, although we need rain now. Find yourself one that is moving some water and fish on.
