First Day....on the board.....

New Years Day. For over ten years a group of  small stream anglers got together to fish a stream. There was something special about being able to take that first fish of the year in a delightful setting with a group of like minded gents. This being the year of covid our actual meeting had to be set aside. So in place we decieded to do it but with close family members. So on day #1 Jeanette and I fished a stream together. The weather was actually quite nice. The half sun half  light cloud day was easy to take compared to some awful New Years Days in the past. The stream was pristine, it's flow ideal. There was hope in day #1....

As you can see the stream was just perfect. Recent rains cleared a lot of branches and other woody debris and deposited it elsewhere.

The first wild jewel of 2021. A healthy specimen that took a soft hackle on the swing.

Usually the lunch would be chili but the deer harvest did not happen for us. So a couple of burgers were cooked up.

There was also a side dish that is a tradition in the south on New Years Day. I'll give you the details in another post.

How streams change. I have fished here for over 20 years. The stream changes but the wild jewels within it are always beautiful.

  1. brk trt, buy the looks of it, you still had enjoyable company on the 1st day of the new year.
I am not sad to see 2020 go as I posted in your last post and dong want to preach, but there is/was one good thing in my mind that came out of 2020. It taught, revealed and we learned a lot about ourselves as individuals and as a society good and bad with all of its happenings. Stay safe and heathy for 2021....Phil

Phil the company was awesome. 2020 we learned to do without and to accept what we had. We also learned to take care of what means the most to us.

  2. Alan,
Unfortunate that your traditional outing had to take a hiatus this year. But I'm sure having Jeanette there more than saved the day. Does Jeanette fish as well or does she just like being outdoors? Conditions sure looked nice for fishing and a stream side picnic. Better days ahead.

Joe she is great company out there. Quite a cheerleader. She does not fish but enjoys the outdoors. Enjoyable outing.

  3. Happy New Year Alan

Looks like you & Jeanette had a great trip out.......

Outdoor food, thin blue lines and wild jewels from the Brook Trout Forest - what more could one ask for at the start of the year?

    Stay safe and take care

Alistair we were at the top of our game on that first day of the new year. If the rest of the year is as good then we will have it made.

  5. Nothing like starting the new year with a couple jewels to hand. Having a couple burgers cooked outdoors isn't too bad either. Happy New Year.

    2. Great to see that you got out on a balmy NYD compared to past years. Good choice on the stream! I fished a stream I had fished once before and found a few. The pinkie was the ticket for me. Happy new year!

  10. Thanks for sharing this traditional outing! Looked positively balmy out there. On New Years Day we went with a Mississippi Pork Roast, sauerkraut and a side of black eyed peas - taking no chances on good luck for 2021!
