Recon, and Some Other Stuff

Yesterday was a day to spend around the house. Pick up a few things at the store coffee being one of them. Stop buy the pharmacy and pick up a prescription and then go home and just do not much of anything.
Well the sitting home didn't last long. The idea was sent out to visit a few streams I had not fished in a long time. The outing was just to see how they looked after the nor'easter that wreaked havoc on us back in October.
Upon arriving at the stream I was surprised by how good a shape the stream was in. Its waters were flowing clear and crisp. There was minimal debris in and along the stream and despite a lack of rain for awhile it had good volume.
I did not take the fly rod so I could not give a report on the fishing. I will give you a report on that soon.

A beautiful freestone stream. This was not always the case with this stream.

While this stream is so close to home and I have barely fished it. This may change soon with the price of fuel.

Natures art. This painting is offered at no charge.

Just a few words about the Grey's fly box. I picked this up Friday at Up Country fly shop. What a good buy. It cost 15.00 and is similar to a C+F at a cost of 40.00.

These are a few variations of a proven pattern. They shall be tested today.

  1. Brk Trt,
nice post on your close to home freestone brooks. The Berkshires in Mass where I live are peppered with such close to home streams as yourself.
I too have a simular fly box purchased from LL Beans, and I love it. You can carry a real load of flies in one box.
Good luck with those newly ties flies, and will wait to hear about your success.....DRYFLYGUY

  3. Great post and a nice reminder that I need to work on tying some small dry flies for the season. I've had streamers on the brain for a while. Some very temping pools there. Looking forward to the follow-up and some brookies from this water.

  5. Very nice looking stream, Gas prices are keeping me local for sure. Also I wondering about the box. For dries, does or will it smash hackles???? I keep all my dry hackles in a loose compartment box to not smash the hackle. Great looking bombs, Looks deadly. Happy fishing!

  6. A very nice post Brk Trt (Brook Trout?)! Lovely little stream with nice surroundings. I really like the flies in your hand. Maybe I'll tie some of them myself. Awaiting a successful story about your fishing in this stream.

Have fun enjoying the nature as well as fly fishing,

Those patterns work well here. I'd love to see how they work over there.

  7. Mother Nature heals herself quite nicely when left alone without interference from man. That's some beautiful water for sure.
I own at least a half dozen of those very same grey's boxes. Like you said , for the price you can't go wrong ,I find them every bit as good as the C&F boxes.
I like those flies , I have a few little creeks where the locals might find those very much to their liking!

Got to have a fishng report on those streams, they really look like they would produce. The Greys fly box is worth the money because of the 4 tray rack. You can get a bunch of flies in there. Thanks for sharing

  11. Beautiful Water and some great flies!! I have a few boxes from a company in Northern Cali called "Irideus", they specialize in Spey rods, reels, lines boxes and flies but have a few smaller boxes for trout sized flies. Many of their boxes are similar designs of the C&F boxes, and Sci-Angler boxes that run $25-$50 but heres the catch, you can buy 3-4 of their boxes, same "molding" I'd say, still for less money brand new on their Ebay-store page!! Gotta love "Brand Names"!!

  13. Gas has been a real killer for the traveling angler.

I find myself staying a little closer to home too nowadays.

The flies look great! I'm sure the trout will approve.
