Happy May

Good morning all. Here it is the first day of May. This is one of Springs best months. As I write this the weather is just what we need, cool and raining. It's good for all that blooms as well as all that swims. May features Cinco de Mayo, as well as Memorial Day. Some of the best fly fishing is offered this month, prolific hatches, longer days to fish, and maybe a new stream to try your luck.

So here's to all you good eggs, I hope May will be good for you.

All along the streams the effects of Spring are showing. Every thing is so green.

The ingredients to a mushroom chowder. Looking at these most of them are known to most. But there are a few things one must have as well as do before you can enjoy this wonderful chowder.

Russet potatoes, they are more starchy and will make a thicker chowder. Second you must use a good quality slab bacon instead of salt pork. Salt pork is very good for most other chowders but bacon will add so much more flavor to the mushrooms. And the key is to grill the portabella mushrooms first, I like to char them a bit this adds that different taste as well as texture. And finally you have to use real butter to finish it off. There can be no substitutes for this.

It's a bowl of homemade love.

  4. With that massive band of welcome rain sweeping across the country theres not much to do, now, thanks to you, I'm on my way to the kitchen! Although I'll add three slices of slab bacon and a side of grits!

  5. The last month before schools out and the crowds hit most of my local waters with the inevitable canoe hatch. I'm not ready for summer... May is indeed a good month!
That chowder looks killer and simple enough I could throw it together while camping.

Enjoy the peace while you can. The chowder is pretty simple, should do well on a camping trip.
