A Tradition...2013

A tradition that was started three years ago continued on New Years day with a group of us fishing a small stream together. What started out with three of us has now become five. Myself, John, aka Apache Trout, Pete, aka TROUT1,also known as the BH soft hackled trout taker, Mark, aka Petes supplier of those BH soft hackle trout takers, and Kirk, aka Trout Quest Redux.

The day was somewhat cold, and the skies never cleared making it feel worse. After gearing up, and enjoying a "Box of Joe" a cup at a time, we split up and agreed to meet back at the lot for lunch. This would give us about 2 hours to fish.

The stream was on the low side but was nice to fish. I tossed flies in the riffled sections at the head of long pools, something this stream is known for. After some time I was rewarded with my first trout of 2013. A beautiful wild brook trout.

My first of 2013

We arrived back at the lot, and the stories kicked in on the mornings outing. John had also taken a brook trout, on a dry fly. The photos can be seen on Marks blog "Fishing Small Streams". There were also reports of hits, and misses.

Lunch was hot venison chili, mini franks, soda, coffee, and dessert of pastry, coffee and egg nog. After lunch it was back at it for an hour or so.

John working a pool with a streamer. That streamer produced a follow by a 16 inch brook trout, unfortunately he did not take.

As the day closed on this beautiful stream, we five small stream junkies said so long. And hope to continue this tradition for many years.

  1. You guys know how to do it. Hot chili would have been perfect on that day. You already got the skunk off for January.

Enjoyable, and the chili was great. Starting out on the right foot.

  2. Had a great time fishing with the crew! Got those two brookies on dries: picket pin floated downstream on the surface & a flat water caddis with a mallard flank wing. Managed to get that big brookie to take another swing at my fly, a beadhead olive bugger, he bumped it but no hook up. Wishing everyone a Happy 2013. See you on the water!

It was sure nice. Dry fly brookies on that cold day, well done amigo.
Now you know where that 16 inch fish lives, and what he likes to eat.

It's grown to five anglers. Any more and we might have to find a larger small stream.

  5. Brk Trt & crew,
well done across the board for the start of 2013. A 16" brookie would have been a nice to hand if successful. But the story is almost as good. Maybe it will take the fly next outing??

Keep up the New years tradition.............Phil

Those are some outstanding looking streams, and I can see why you guys are out there braving the cold to land some of those beautiful brookies. Thanks for sharing with all of us fisherman who wish we had that type of habitat to fish.

  8. Seems like a much better way to ring in the new year than at home with a hang over or stuck in NYC. Beautiful trout. Was the MSR Pocket Rocket enough to fire up the pot of chili?

      Thanks.
No more hangovers for this guy, and NY City is nice on T.V.
The rocket worked fast. The sterno did its share steaming the franks.

  9. Looks like you got that trout on an orange head or a picket pin , I can't tell from the pic, either way though that trout likes redheads. Haha.. nice new years fish!

It was the orange head wet fly. John got one on a small Picket Pin fished dry.

  14. Great report Brk Trt..Did you opt out of leather? boots and into some waders for this outing? Wet feet on a cold day don't mix.

No leather on that stream. Used hippers and stayed very warm and dry.
